USA vs. Honduras: Los Catrachos Won't Contain Explosive American Squad

The United States national team has been overpowering throughout the Gold Cup. Their high-powered offense will lead to another win over scrappy Honduras in the semifinals.

Through three matches, the Americans are undefeated and have outscored opponents 16-3 in the process. Honduras has a more than respectable mark of three wins and a draw, but their contests have been much closer.

It holds only a 4-2 edge over opponents thus far.

Honduras has found success with their defense, but containing the Americans will be a very tall task. The United States has two players who have scored as many—or more—goals than Honduras has combined in the tournament.

Chris Wondolowski has scored five goals during the Gold Cup, which is tied for the lead in the tournament. Veteran Landon Donovan has scored three goals including a tally on a penalty shot in a 4-1 win over Cuba.

Costa Rica was able to hold the Americans to just one goal, but as good as the U.S. has been offensively, the defense has been just as good. They shut out Costa Rica to win proving they can win a shootout or a tough defensive battle.

The question for Honduras then is not only can they keep the Americans from exploding, but can Honduras score enough—or at all against the Americans?

Donis Escober has been dynamite in goal for Los Catrachos, but holding down Wondo, Donovan and the emerging Joe Benny Corona Crespin is too much to ask of any keeper without some offense to remove the pressure.

The only chance Honduras has to beat the United States is likely by a 1-0 shutout. The team would need to play their usual brand of stingy defense and hope to hold down the American attack.

Though it is hard to imagine Honduras holding the Americans scoreless, it is even less likely Honduras scores two goals against the United States' defense.

While Honduras may have drawn some confidence from the fact that they downed Costa Rica by the same 1-0 score the Americans did, the team simply doesn't have the playmakers to bust open a match that is tied late.

The Americans have more than one player capable of scoring clutch goals. This match has all the makings of a 2-0 win for the United States.
