The BCS On Capitol Hill
I find it absolutely hilarious that with all of things that we have going on (and wrong) in this country, that Congress has the time to bring sports issues to the table. With that said, I don't think we need a hearing on Capitol Hill to see that the BCS is a joke! Every year at least one or two teams are "railroaded" by the BCS for various reasons.
Either your out of conference schedule is not "tough" enough or the conference you play in is considered weak. If you are the Boise States and the Utahs of the college football world you cannot get the "powerhouse" teams to play you (even if you're willing to play them at their stadiums) because they are afraid to play that you will beat them and ruin whatever title chance they think that they have.
If you are a team from one of the power conferences and you slip up and lose one game, you're forced to put up 50 or 60 points a game (last year's Oklahoma team) just to impress the polls and the computers. Granted for every Boise State there is a Hawaii who got completely destroyed by Georgia, but the point is that Hawaii had the chance to prove their worth on the field. Is that not the essence of competition, regardless of what sport it is.
It pains me that we have to come up with all these different formulas to determine who the champion is in college football. Of course we all know why there is not a playoff system in (Division I or FBS or whatever else they're calling the divisions these days) college football... MONEY!!! Don't believe any of the nonsense that some of these AD's have said. A playoff system will cut into the class time of the student athletes or some other baseless explanation. Because if you believe that then I guess the football players that play in every other level of college football are stupid because they participate in playoff games...
In addition to the money aspect, we have to get over this notion that everybody has to be a winner. Who is concerned with the winner of the "Nobody Cares.Com Bowl?" Everybody doesn't win in life, it's just that plain and simple. There has to be a way to turn at least 12-15 of these bowls into playoff games. I realize that since there are 119 bowl eligible teams, that we cannot completely do away with all of the bowl games, but we can do better than this.
