National League Players to Watch
Carlos Gonzalez, OF, Colorado Rockies
Carlos Gonzalez ranks first in the NL in home runs (24), slugging percentage (.619) and OPS (.988), fourth in RBI (63), eighth in stolen bases (15), 13th in on-base percentage (.369) and 14th in batting average (.304). And for you advanced statisticians out there, he ranks fifth in WAR (4.3).
Joey Votto, 1B, Cincinnati Reds
Joey Votto ranks first in the NL in on-base percentage, fourth in batting average (.321) and OPS (.943), and seventh in WAR (3.8). And don't let the fact that he has just 40 RBI lead you astray. Votto is hitting .316 with runners in scoring position this seasonโhe just hasn't been given that many opportunities to drive runners in (he leads baseball with 62 walks).
David Wright, 3B, New York Mets
David Wright may not be the home run hitter he once was (13 home runs so far), but he's still a strong offensive player. The 30-year-old ranks third in the NL in on-base percentage, sixth in OPS (.913) and seventh in slugging percentage (.519). He also ranks second in WAR (4.7).
American League Players to Watch
Miguel Cabrera, 3B, Detroit Tigers
Miguel Cabrera continues to demonstrate why he's considered to be one of the best players in baseball. The 2012 AL MVP and Triple Crown winner ranks first in the AL in batting average (.368), on-base percentage (.457), OPS (1.137), RBI (90), runs (67) and WAR (5.1). He also ranks second in home runs (28), slugging percentage (.679) and extra-base hits (49).
Chris Davis, 1B, Baltimore Orioles
Chris Davis leads baseball in home runs (33), slugging percentage (.712) and extra-base hits (59). He also ranks second in the AL in RBI (85), runs (63) and OPS (1.106). Beyond that, he ranks fourth in on-base percentage (.395) and fifth in WAR (4.3).
Mike Trout, OF, Los Angeles Angels
The Angels have been a mess this season, but it hasn't been because of Mike Trout. The 2012 AL Rookie of the Year and two-time All-Star ranks third in runs (60) and extra-base hits (48) , fourth in slugging percentage (.554) and OPS (.447), fifth in on-base percentage (.393) and stolen bases (20), sixth in batting average (.315) and seventh in WAR (3.9).ย
