NHL Trade Rumors: Tyler Seguin and More Players Potentially on the Move
As expected, the NHL offseason has gotten off to a crazy start.
Along with some headline-worthy buy-outs, team have also been especially active on the trade market, beginning with a blockbuster draft-day deal that sent goalie Cory Schneider to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for the ninth overall selection, as reported by the NHL’s Twitter account:
With an introduction like that, it’s hard to believe this summer will fail to meet expectations. The trade market is only beginning to heat up.

With the draft in full swing and more players likely to find a new home, let’s take a look at a trio of players rumored to be available for the right price.
Tyler Seguin
According to Bob McKenzie of TSN, Boston Bruins winger Nathan Horton isn’t going to re-sign with the team this summer. He also notes that center Tyler Seguin could be on the move as part of an eventual trade:
It seems unlikely the Bruins would be willing to trade a cornerstone of their franchise, especially after re-signing him to a long-term deal prior to the lockout.
But as Adam Gretz of CBS Sports notes, Boston is tight against the salary cap and needs to focus on brining back goalie Tuukka Rask:
"Seguin just signed a long-term extension with the Bruins prior to the lockout that has him under contract through the end of the 2018-19 season at more than $5.75 million per year. The Bruins, however, are tight against the salary cap and need to work out a long-term contract extension for starting goalie Tuukka Rask, who is currently a restricted free agent.
"
Gretz also points out that center Patrice Bergeron is entering a contract year and will likely be looking for a raise following this season. For the Bruins, this offseason is becoming an exercise in picking and choosing.
It remains to be seen what Boston would be expecting in return for Seguin, but given its financial situation, now may be a good time for teams with cap space to start exploring some options.
Alex Edler
John Shannon was spot-on with his expectation that Schneider could be moved. He also offered another intriguing name who could be on the block:
McKenzie also chimed in with a similar belief:
Defenseman Alex Edler may be another victim of the salary cap as the Vancouver Canucks look to free up some financial wiggle room this offseason.
According to James O’Brien of Pro Hockey Talk, the Canucks would probably be more willing to deal a player like Keith Ballard in favor of keeping Edler, but he also suggests the return would be much greater for the 27-year-old former third-round pick.
Still, the Canucks have other options for clearing some cap space this summer short of trading one of their best defenders. Unless another team swoops in with an irresistible deal, it’s hard to imagine Vancouver pulling the string on such a deal.
Scott Clemmensen
Plenty of teams will be in search of extra help in net this summer. With a big domino having already fallen in Schneider, it wouldn’t be a surprise for a goalie like Scott Clemmensen to be one of the next on the list.
As reported by Renaud Lavoie of RDS, the Florida Panthers may be interested in moving the 35-year-old goalie this summer:
Of course, the biggest benefit to teams looking for extra help at the position would be Clemmensen’s small cap figure, as Lavoie reported to be only $1.2 million next season. Given his age and poor numbers in 2013 (.874 save percentage), any team willing to make a deal for Clemmensen would do so simply looking for depth and a veteran presence in net.
