Spain vs. Brazil: Home-Field Advantage Won't Be Enough For Selecao

Kyle NewportJun 8, 2018

Brazil is the host country for the 2013 Confederations Cup, but home-field advantage won't make a difference when it takes on Spain.

The tournament will wrap up on Sunday when the top-ranked team in the world, Spain, tries to win its first Confederations Cup. Brazil, on the other hand, is the two-time defending champion and has won three tournaments overall.

With so much on the line at Maracana Stadium on Sunday, Brazil will have to find a way to shut down Spain's talented roster.

Group A was much tougher than Group B, which could favor Brazil. Brazil had to face Japan, Mexico and Italy in group play and made it through undefeated. Spain was tested by Uruguay but coasted past Tahiti and Nigeria. And it squeezed by Italy in penalty kicks, which shows the squad isn't unstoppable.

However, Spain will be ready to go when the final game gets underway. Its roster is much deeper than Brazil's, and talent will ultimately come out on top.

Neymar has been Brazil's best player in the tournament. He has three goals and two assists in four games, but he was held without a goal for the first time last game.

Fred, Hulk, Oscar and Thiago Silva will have to be big in this match in order for Brazil to have any chance. Neymar has shown the ability to be a big scorer, but he will need help against Spain.

While Neymar has been consistent throughout the tournament, Fred has turned it up lately. He has three goals in the last two games

Meanwhile, Spain's roster is filled with stars. David Villa, David Silva and Fernando Torres are all threats to score. Those players all have multi-goal games in this tournament, and Brazil will have to find a way to neutralize them.

The names don't stop there. Jordi Alba, Juan Mata and Xavi are all talented players who can make it tough for opponents to stop Spain.

Brazil did a good job getting to this point. It survived a couple of tough matches and managed to get through unbeaten. But now, the squad will have to be perfect in order to knock off Spain.

Spain is the favorite entering this match. It has many players who can make a difference. Shutting down Neymar will be the key for Spain, but it has the talent to win a high-scoring game.

Playing in Brazil is an advantage, but it won't be enough to give Brazil an edge over the superior Spain. Talent will be the deciding factor, and Spain will walk away at the end of the match as champions.
