These two sides met in the final of the 2012 European Championship, and it was disaster for the Italians. There was no shame in their 4-0 defeat, though, as they tried to take the game right to Spain. It backfired in a big way. La Roja were unstoppable in that match.
When the two sides met in the group stage, Cesare Prandelli used a 2-5-2 formation. It was very successful, as Italy drew 1-1 with Spain.
It looks like Prandelli has gone with that formation again by the trio of Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci and Andrea Barzagli at the back, per The Guardian's Paul Doyle. Alberto Gilardino is replacing Mario Balotelli, as well.
Vicente del Bosque had a decision to make at attacking midfielder and striker. David Silva comes in for Cesc Fabregas, and Fernando Torres gets the nod ahead of Roberto Soldado.
With Italy going three at the back, this match looks set to be a chess match. It's a very pragmatic approach from Prandelli and won't lend itself to a lot of excitement in terms of attacking football.
Instead, it will be fun to watch how Spain handles the formation, and whether or not Italy will be able to get their revenge from Euro 2012.
