Players to Watch
Fernando Torres, F, Spain
Fernando Torres leads all players in the tournament with five goals in just two games played. He scored four goals against Tahiti and one goal against Nigeria in the group stage. This is despite the 29-year-old scoring eight goals all season with Chelsea in the Premier League.
Hey, Spain will take it.
Italy has allowed a combined seven goals in its last two games. The side allowed three in a nail-biter against Japan and four in the loss to Brazil. Given the way Torres and the Spanish have been scoring, that could be a recipe for disaster for the Italians.
David Villa, F, Spain
David Villa has not only scored three goals in the tournament (second on Spain), he's also notched two assists, which is first on the team.
The 31-year-old registered 10 goals and five assists in 28 games (17 starts) for Barcelona in La Liga last season. He's not only a very strong finisher at net, he's an unselfish player, always looking for opportunities to include his teammates.
Villa will be another player Italy will have to watch out for in Fortaleza.
Andrea Pirlo, M, Italy
With Mario Balotelli out of action with a strained thigh, Italy will need Andrea Pirlo's playmaking ability to stand a chance against the powerful Spanish.
The 34-year-old midfielder has been an important part of Italy's national team since 2002. He helped Italy win the 2006 World Cup, while guiding them to the final of Euro 2012.
Pirlo scored in Italy's 2-1 victory over Mexico and notched an assist in Italy's 4-3 win over Japan before missing the 4-2 loss to Brazil with a calf injury.
But Pirlo will return for the semifinals against Spain, just in time to do more damage on the pitch. His passing skills, as well as his expertise in free kicks, will be needed.
