Weekend in Review: 500, 755, A Tragedy, and a Celebration
Ron JohnsonAug 7, 2007
News and notes from a weekend filled with records, asterisks, and tearful tributes...Daddy Yankee Nails No. 500
After a prolonged slump, Alex Rodriguez finally blasted his way into the record books Saturday night, becoming the youngest player in baseball history to jack 500 balls out of the park.
A-Rod joined Frank Thomas in this season's 500 club, and is the 22nd player in baseball history to reach the mark. Speaking of the Big Hurt—he made his own history on Saturday night by knocking two homers to pass Eddie Murray for 20th on the all-time list.
Bonds Away!
At last...we can breathe! The war is over! Barry Bonds has saved the world!
Ah, sarcasm.
Sad how Bay Area fans forgot all about Bill Walsh after Bonds finally got around to hitting 755. But then again when's the last time the Giants had something to be proud of?
Bonds tied Hank Aaron's career home run record on Saturday...and the world didn't care. Everyone in LA booed. Everyone in New York booed. The only folks who cheered were the ones still in denial about their beloved hero.
Barry's daughter Aisha likes to do the "chicken dance" when opposing pitchers walk her dad. Truth is, the only coward out there is her old man.
So congratulations, Barry!* You tied Hank Aaron's record.* You're one step away from making history.* Props for 755.*
Live and Let Die
The death of Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams remains an unsolved mystery, and wideout Javon Walker isn't ready to talk about the events of New Year's Eve...no matter how much the Denver media wants him to.
And honestly, who can blame him?
With training camp under way, the Broncos are trying to move on. Walker, sporting Williams' patented "Fro-Hawk," only wants to talk about football.
And for the first time, I agree with him.
So to all those reporters trying to squeeze a scoop out of Javon—take Paul McCartney's advice: Live and Let Die.
A Family Affair
The Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony is always memorable.
This year, it was a family affair.
Gene Hickerson's son Bob led him into immortality. Roger Wehrli and his grandchildren basked in the glow of his fine career. Bruce Matthews celebrated with his brother Clay. Charlie Sanders got choked up talking about his mother. Thurman Thomas asked his wife Patti to marry him again. And Michael Irvin paid homage to his two sons.
The inductees are plenty famous, but on Saturday they let their families take the spotlight.
Seems to me there's no better way to take your place in history.
