FIFA Under-20 World Cup: Top 5 GIFs so Far from Young Stars

Karl MatchettJun 8, 2018

The young stars of today will be the newest generation of the world's best players in the future, and the FIFA Under-20 World Cup, currently taking place in Turkey, is providing some glimpses of those potential top names.

While the tournament has provided some fantastic football all-round so far, and is still relatively in its infancy for this year's edition, there have nonetheless been more than a few stand-out individual moments to look back on and enjoy.

Here are the top five moments so far.

5. Penalty saved!

France and USA played out a 1-1 draw in Istanbul during the second round of games in the group stage, but it could have been worse for France after they conceded a penalty while they still led in the game.

Alphonse Areola was the hero of the hour though as he managed to save the spot kick, preserving France's lead at the time, though he couldn't prevent the equaliser coming five minutes before full time.

Even so, his actions helped keep France unbeaten, giving them a good chance of progressing to the knockout stages.

4. Injury time Equaliser

England had taken a two-goal lead over Iraq in their Group E match in Antalya, and would have been confident of seeing out the game and taking three points as they led 2-0 with 15 minutes remaining.

In a big turnaround though, Iraq scored a penalty and then pressed hard for a deserved equaliser—which duly arrived in the 93rd minute of the game. Ali Adnan got the all-important leveler to frustrate England and delight his own nation.

3. Pick of the Goals from a 2-2 Thriller

Portugal and Korea Republic faced up in Group B in Kayseri, where the Europeans twice took the lead—only to be pegged back both times by their young Asian counterparts.

Korea's first equaliser was route one mixed with a real moment of quality, with Ryu Seungwoo showing great control and an unerring finish after latching onto a long, straight goal kick.

The match finished 2-2, leaving both teams tied at the top of the group on four points apiece.

2. USA 1-4 Spain: Version 1

Spain outclassed and out-passed the States in this one-sided Group A fixture, with Gerard Deulofeu netting twice for the Spaniards. His first goal, scored just before half time, was a fine strike, curled into the far top corner from outside the penalty area.

Teammate Jese Rodriguez also scored a brace of quality goals, but this one from Deulofeu was the pick of the bunch—as far as the victors were concerned.

1. USA 1-4 Spain: Version 2

The best image of the tournament so far and a fantastic goal, has to go to the USA side who were so soundly beaten on that day.

Already four goals behind, Luis Gil came up with a moment of real class to at least salvage some personal pride, twisting and turning to create space before lifting a brilliant curled effort into the top corner of the goal.

It didn't win the game, but it won plenty of plaudits.
