Week 16 MLS Power Rankings

0 of 20

It has taken three weeks for a new club to find their way to the top of the MLS Power Rankings and unseat Montreal from the top spot.

That is exactly what happened this week after a small but important group of five league fixtures played on Saturday.

Read on to see who is the new No. 1 in the power rankings this week.

Criteria

1 of 20

Every week, our MLS experts will rank each team from one to 19.

Each team will be given a point total for its specific ranking.

For example, the team that is ranked No. 1 is given 19 points, while the last-place team receives just one point.

We will compile the votes each week, and the team with the highest point total will be placed atop the power rankings.

A promising start against fellow Eastern Conference strugglers Toronto FC turned into another depressing defeat this weekend for D.C. United.

18. Chivas USA

3 of 20

    Points: 8

    Last Week's Ranking: 18

The continued down time for the players of Chivas USA continued this weekend.

The Goats will play their first match in 18 days on Wednesday when they visit Vancouver.

17. Chicago Fire

    Points: 14

    Last Week's Ranking: 15

15.San Jose Earthquakes

6 of 20

    Points: 20

    Last Week's Ranking: 16

Week 16 Result: Win over Colorado, 2-1.

The start of the Mark Watson era was a successful one for the Earthquakes as they won on the road in Colorado.

Steven Lenhart and Sam Cronin scored in the Earthquakes' first victory since May 8.

14. Colorado Rapids

7 of 20

    Points: 26

    Last Week's Ranking: 12

Week 16 Result: Loss to San Jose, 2-1.

Colorado failed to defend their home turf on Saturday night as they fell to San Jose.

Nathan Sturgis' 67th minute goal did pull the Rapids within a goal, but a comeback for the 10-man Rapids would not rear its head.

Oscar Pareja's club will look to avoid their second losing streak of the season on Wednesday in Chicago against the Fire.

13. New England Revolution

8 of 20

    Points: 28

    Last Week's Ranking: 11

Week 16 Result: Loss to Vancouver, 4-3.

The Revolution were handed a cruel loss in British Columbia over the weekend.

After Andrew Farrell was wrongly sent off in the 23rd minute, the two-goal lead of the Revolution quickly slipped away.

Despite pegging a goal back in the second half, New England was sent back across the continent disappointed.

    Last Week's Ranking: 14

Week 16 Result: Win over New England, 4-3.

Kenny Miller was the focal point of the Whitecaps' victory at home over New England on Saturday.

Miller's controversial flop in the 23rd minute handed the Whitecaps a man advantage after Andrew Farrell was sent off.

Miller took advantage of the man advantage by scoring twice in his club's fifth win of the season.

11. Los Angeles Galaxy

10 of 20

    Points: 36

    Last Week's Ranking: 10

Week 16 Result: No Match Played

11 of 20

    Points: 43

    Last Week's Ranking: 13

The injury-ravaged Crew somehow managed to pull together and defeat the leaders of the Eastern Conference on their home turf.

Matias Sanchez and Dominic Oduro scored in the win for the Crew, but the long term concern of how to deal with injuries to Eddie Gaven and Glauber will continue to grow.

    Last Week's Ranking: 3

Week 16 Result: Loss to Portland, 1-0.

Jason Kreis' club will play on their home pitch on Saturday against Western Conference foe Seattle.

1. Portland Timbers

20 of 20

    Points: 75

    Last Week's Ranking: 4

Week 16 Result: Win over FC Dallas, 1-0.
