Spain vs. Russia: Date, Time, Stream, TV Info and Preview for Euro U-21 Match

Rob GoldbergJun 6, 2013

The future of world football will be on display at the 2013 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, especially when Spain takes the pitch in its first match.

As dominant as the senior team has been in recent years while winning the World Cup and two Euro Championships, the younger squad has been just as successful. In qualifying, the U-21 team won nine of its 10 matches and had one draw, while outscoring opponents 35-3.

It is pretty clear that this world power will remain on top for quite some time.

Of course, Russia is not a team to overlook. The squad has plenty of young talent and also did well in qualifying for this event.

Every match is important at this stage, so one or two mistakes can be the difference between a championship and nothing. With this in mind, make sure you do not miss a second of the action in this anticipated match.

When: June 6

Time: 11:45 a.m. ET

Where: Teddi Maicha, Jerusalem

TV: ESPNDeportes

Live Stream: ESPN3

What They're Saying

While Spain is the defending champion of this event and clearly has the most talented squad, manager Julen Lopetegui does not want to get ahead of himself. According to Yahoo Eurosport, he told the media:

"I do not want to talk about being favourites. We just want to do well in the tournament. We have great respect for all the countries involved."

It is a good idea to keep his squad focused, but that will not stop people viewing the tournament from making predictions. The truth is this team is expected to win it all, and anything less would be a disappointment.

Spain Player to Watch: Isco

Usually, these youth competitions feature players who have yet to make an impact at the club level. Spain is obviously an exception to that rule.

Goalkeeper David de Gea has plenty of experience in net for Manchester United and will make a huge impact throughout the tournament, but Isco might be the most important player in this match. The midfielder is the player who makes things happen on this squad, and he will be needed against Russia.

Isco currently stars for Malaga and could be in high demand this summer as the higher-profile clubs look to acquire his services. This is because, at just 21 years old, he already has great vision and playmaking ability.

If Russia has any chance of slowing down this Spanish offense, it will need to know where Isco is at all times.

Russia Player to Watch: Fyodor Smolov

While Fyodor Smolov has struggled to get as many goals as he would have liked with Dinamo Moscow, he has no such problem with the Russian national team.

In nine qualifying appearances, the forward has an impressive seven goals, which was among the most in the entire tournament. He is easily the best scorer on the roster, and the squad will need him to come through to keep up with Spain.

Additionally, he is the most experienced player on the roster at 23 years old with 14 total caps on the U21 team. He must display plenty of leadership to help Russia in this tough match.

Prediction: Spain 3, Russia 1

Between Isco, Rodrigo and others, Spain has a deadly offense that will be incredibly difficult to keep off the scoreboard. Meanwhile, the defense is just as strong with a few Barcelona members to go along with De Gea in net.

Russia has a solid roster but will be overmatched in this one. In all likelihood, it will struggle to get too many points in a group with Spain, Germany and the Netherlands.

The Spanish squad should jump out to an early lead and do enough to get the win.
