We Can Bring Down the BCS By Ourselves
I have to tell you I had this dream the other night and it was a good one. The U started off the season with a horrible loss in the rain that was causing crazy turnovers. It even ended with a wide right and each and every FSU fan appeared to simultaneously find out that they all won the lottery at the same time.
The 'Canes lurched there ways off the field soaking wet, depleted, heart broken. While the 'Noles some how seemed to be glowing, elated and somehow dry as a bone in the pouring rain.
Quickly the next few weeks went by and after one more lose to the Hookies the season seemed to be doomed. Then the team caught fire, the young guns were now a blazing and the team seemed unstoppable. In the ACC championship, the 'Canes dominated an over confident FSU team by four TDS.
However, Utah ended the season undefeated as well as USC and TCU. Tennessee won the SEC and had two losses of their own. So we had a decent season 8-2, but where would we end up, why so few games? Well we didn’t play FAMU this year and some how ended the season early.
And here is the twist instead of finding out what Bowl game we were going to we found out we were a two seed in the South East division.
Ahead of us was the Peach Bowl, where we were matched up against LSU who was the three seed as they lost the SEC championship to UT. And UT and FSU were to play in the outback bowl as a match up of the one and four seeds.
And to be frank, I woke up in a tent, as it was too good to be true. I tried to go back to sleep to keep the dream going but I just couldn’t get to sleep. I stayed in bed all day long hoping to extend the dream but to no avail.
It amazes me (and maybe I’m biased because I’m from the south), but the end results of putting a playoff system into place is that it would be the best sporting event in the world.
It would be the most widely followed the biggest money maker ever. It would create a larger fan base, more advertising revenue and would bring in countless dollars to the cities that hosted these events.
Where is the dollar loss? Where is the downfall? And let’s be honest there could also be another playoff system that took a hold as the NIT does in basketball. That way everyone would be served.
You could allocate games to existing bowl sites based on the revenue dollars they brought in today. You could even call the games the same thing you would call the bowl game.
The Outback Bowl would still retain its name and location and tradition, yet it would bring in more dollars. It would now become the first round of playoffs where a top-four team was matched up against a top 16 team.
If any bowl games were left off of the list then whose to say they couldn’t still hold those games? I mean if Hawaii wants to play Texas A&M in the Cheetos Liberty City Music Poinsettia Bowl then let them.
Why, Why, Why? Why are we so helpless when it’s our interest and our time and our money that allows them to keep going like this? Why can’t the fans have an organization that allows them unite and put an end to this for once and for all?
Why do we allow the BCS to exist when we hate it so much? Why are we paying our big brother to punch us in the gut every single year when it matters the most?
Well the answer lies in the fact that we are to greedy and our greed is being used against us. We don’t need the president to step in; we don’t need congress to step in. If we want to put an end to this drama then its time for us to put up the fight, it’s time to boycott the bowl games.
One year, one season and that’s all it would take. People hear me out. If we boycotted the major bowl games this year, if we didn’t buy the tickets, if we didn’t travel, if we didn’t turn the TV on we would win in one season. If we took on sponsors who would back us up, then we could fund our effort and get the word out and end the madness.
I am seriously looking into what it would take to start this effort. I’m yet a small man but with a big mouth that has, thanks to the Internet the ability to ever expand like never before. Join the fight, boycott the bowl games!
And oh yeah: Go Canes!!!!!!
