Serie A 2012-13 Season: Picking the Top 10 Goals of the Year
What a year for Serie A. This season, Italian football was one of the most exciting leagues on the planet with more thrills and spills than this reporter can remember.
Juventus claimed their second successive Scudetto in confident fashion, but that's not to say they were the only side worth watching on the peninsula. As this list proves, there was plenty of action north and south every week.
So, has your favourite goal made the cut?
Facundo Roncaglia for Fiorentina, Away to Parma
1 of 10Facundo Roncaglia had a solid first season in Florence, making 24 league appearances as part of Vincenzo Montella's Fiorentina defence. The former Boca Juniors man even came up with three goals—but none more beautiful than his strike against Parma.
Midway through the first half, away from home to a decent Parma side, the ball comes to Roncaglia thanks to a clever square ball from Borja Valero.
He's just past the halfway line, not exactly where you would expect a central defender to be shooting from. But for whatever reason, the Argentinian sees his chance at glory, and the resulting strike is sublime.
Antonio Mirante does his best to get to it and almost tips it over the bar, but the effort's just too good. It was a deserving game-winner and would be higher up this list if Fiorentina hadn't blown the lead in the dying moments of the game.
Mauro Icardi for Sampdoria, at Home to Juventus
2 of 10Sampdoria's exciting young forward Mauro Icardi scored 10 goals in Serie A this term, three of them against the champions.
Having gone an entire season without being beaten in the league, Juventus' loss early this term to Inter came as something of a shock. But then, all good things come to an end, and the Nerazzurri are old rivals. More surprising was that plucky Sampdoria were able to repeat the feat two months later.
The 20-year-old forward scored both goals on the night, overhauling a lead that Sebastian Giovinco had built for the visitors thanks to a penalty. A goal against the best team in the league and a keep like Buffon is always deserving of praise, so rather than pick one, let's just look at them both.
Antonio Candreva for Lazio, at Home to AC Milan
3 of 10Lazio's Antonio Candreva has a reputation for being shy and retiring, but there's nothing bashful about this effort.
Finding himself in some space in the middle of the park at the Stadio Olimpico, the Roman decides to take his chance—and the result is sublime. Lazio ran out of this game 3-2 winners with goals from Hernanes and Miroslav Klose, but it was Candreva's effort that really got the Curva Nord singing.
Enzo Maresca for Sampdoria, at Home to Atalanta
4 of 10Incredible skill from Sampdoria's Enzo Maresca here. The veteran Italian is not well known for his goalscoring abilities, but he had no trouble finding a touch of magic to beat Andrea Consigli in the Atalanta goal on this occasion.
Maresca's effort drew Samp level with the Bergamasca, until a late strike from Giuseppe De Luca won it for the visitors. Even so, this was a strike deserving of recognition.
Fabrizio Miccoli for Palermo, at Home to Chievo Verona
5 of 10Palermo fans had little to cheer this season, ending up relegated after a traumatic campaign in Sicily. The club's talismanic No.10, Fabrizio Miccoli, was singled out for abuse by the president on several occasions, but the classic fantasista has little to worry about because people gave up listening to Maurizio Zamparini's nonsense years ago.
This is as incredible a goal as you'll ever see, part of a 4-1 hammering of Chievo Verona that ended a desperate start to the season for the Rosaneri.
Stephan El Shaarawy for AC Milan, Away to Inter
6 of 10Picking one of Stephan El Shaarawy's goals for this list wasn't easy, because to my mind the young Italian's strikes are almost always impressive for one reason or another.
This beauty against Inter made the cut for several reasons. It shows great skill to position the ball that well, with such power, while moving at pace and going off balance. The way he catches it with the outside of his boot is a joy to watch. And it's against the old foe, Inter. Just a shame that Milan couldn't hang on for the win after such an effort from this season's leading man.
Edinson Cavani for Napoli, at Home to Lazio
7 of 10Edinson Cavani's hat-trick for Napoli against Lazio back in September showed why he's so coveted. Long-range strikes, defence-spltting runs, skill on the ball and off it. He can get you any way he likes.
The Uruguayan's scored a few this season that could make this list, but his effort to complete his hat-trick is classic Cavani. An offside trap left for dust, a skillful rounding of the keeper and a cool, collected slot home as three defenders come charging desperately.
Francesco Totti for Roma, at Home to Fiorentina
8 of 10Roma's December home game against Fiorentina was one of the highlights of the whole Serie A season. Two quality teams going hell for leather, with plenty of skill on show and no small amount of entertainment.
And who else would you expect to be at the centre of such proceedings? Roma's legendary captain Francesco Totti, of course.
The Roman got two wonderful goals and it would be a shame to ignore either. For this reporter's money, the creativity and skill required for the deft little flick with the outside of the boot is hard to beat, but the long-range effort isn't exactly lacking in technicality, either. And he got the assist for the first goal too. A vintage night for il Capitano.
Paul Pogba for Juventus, at Home to Udinese
9 of 10Sir Alex Ferguson didn't get many calls wrong during his time at Manchester United, but letting Paul Pogba leave for Juventus looks like a huge mistake by the Red Devils.
The young Frenchman has been sensational for the Bianconeri this season, earning a regular birth in one of the best midfields in the world, despite his relative inexperience.
Both goals against Udinese justified Antonio Conte's faith in Pogba. Perhaps the slick little turn before his strike adds an extra flash of brilliance to the second, but there's no complaints about the first. It's not for nothing that Juventini everywhere are extremely excited about Pogba's potential.
Panagiotis Kone for Bologna, Away to Napoli
10 of 10Bologna won't have been heading south for their clash with Napoli expecting a win. The Rossoblu are a solid side, but these days, victories at the San Paolo are usually beyond all but the best sides in Serie A.
Step forward Panagiotis Kone. The Greek's been a revelation for Bologna this term, and this stunner proved his quality in the toughest of circumstances. Drawing his side level, it would be the spark that inspired an unlikely away win, too.
But what do you think? It's impossible for one person to remember every goal in what's been a spectacular Serie A season. What would you like to have seen included? Let me know on Twitter, @ColliOBrien, or in the comments section here and perhaps we can add the best goals that missed out.
