Miguel Maysonet: Video Highlights for Former Stony Brook RB

Gary DavenportApr 26, 2013

The collegiate careers of the players entering the 2013 NFL draft are filled with all sorts of pitfalls, from player arrests to injuries and poor performance.

However, Stony Brook running back Miguel Maysonet is unique among these players, in that his bump in the proverbial road involved his not having a team to play for.

After Maysonet's freshman year at Hofstra, the football team was disbanded, paving the way for Maysonet to transfer to Stony Brook, where he enjoyed an incredibly productive three-year run.

Here's a look back at some of the highlights of Maysonet's time with the Seawolves.

Leaping into Notoriety vs. Syracuse (2012)

1 of 6

It isn't very often that a player from tiny Stony Brook makes his way onto ESPN's SportsCenter.

However, Maysonet accomplished that feat with this nifty 71-yard touchdown run against Syracuse in 2012.

The play was a fairly straightforward off-tackle run, but after leaping over one defender and bouncing off another, it was off to the races for the 5'9", 209-pound Maysonet.

Taking It the Distance

Miguel Maysonet had a ridiculously productive senior season, rushing for nearly 2,000 yards and scoring an eye-popping 21 touchdowns.

One of those touchdowns is featured in this clip, where Maysonet once again takes the ball off-tackle, stiff-arming a defender at the line of scrimmage.

Just like against Syracuse, Maysonet runs through a tackle downfield, and just like against the Orange, the result is six points.

Receiving Ability

It's pretty hard to get a feel for what kind of a receiver Maysonet is, if only because he just wasn't used as one much at Stony Brook.

Over the past three seasons, Maysonet caught all of 18 passes.

However, if this highlight is any indication, then Maysonet's hands are just fine, as after getting behind the defense Maysonet reels in a long pass for yet another touchdown.

Impressive Agility vs. Lafayette (2011)

4 of 6

You know that a running back is the focal point of his offense when a team completes all of one pass over the course of an entire game.

That was the case in Stony Brook's 2011 homecoming tilt with Lafayette, a game in which Miguel Maysonet rushed for 194 yards and four touchdowns.

The first of those four touchdowns is shown here, where Maysonet shows excellent agility in quickly bouncing the ball to the outside and taking it to the house from 35 yards out.

Exploding Through the Middle vs. Villanova (2012)

5 of 6

One of Miguel Maysonet's biggest assets is his decisiveness. He doesn't dance around in the backfield. He sees the hole, and then hits it with authority, which is especially appealing to NFL teams that utilize a zone-blocking scheme.

That decisiveness was on display in the second quarter of Stony Brook's 2012 FCS playoff matchup with Villanova.

In this highlight, Maysonet explodes through a hole in the middle of the field, hitting that hole hard as opposed to wasting energy running laterally.

The result may not have been a touchdown, but Maysonet picks up a big chunk of yardage on the play.

Showing off His Wheels: Stony Brook Pro Day (2013)

6 of 6

All eyes were on Miguel Maysonet at Stony Brook's pro day, in part because Maysonet wasn't able to run at the NFL Scouting Combine due to an injured hamstring.

The 20 or so scouts in attendance weren't disappointed, as Maysonet ran a 4.45-second 40-yard dash and put up 21 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press.

Those numbers certainly didn't do anything to hurt Maysonet's chances of being the first Stony Brook player ever selected in the NFL draft.
