Power Ranking Top Recruits Attending First Two Events of 2014 Rivals Camp Series

Andrew KulhaJun 8, 2018

This is the time of year when the focus of the college football recruiting world starts to shift to camps, combines and 7-on-7s, and the first Rivals camps are days away.

Some of the best recruits in the country will be making their way to Phoenix on March 9 and Los Angeles on March 10 to see how they stack up against other elite high school football players. They'll look to make names for themselves and perhaps draw a bit more interest on the recruiting trail. Performing well at a camp like this can realistically garner a recruit many more offers.

Here's a power ranking of the top-10 recruits who will be at one of the Rivals' camps this weekend:

Source: Check out this list of camp participants via Adam Gorney of Rivals.com

10. Jalen Greene, 4-Star Dual-Threat QB, Junipero Serra High School (CA)

1 of 10

Camp: Los Angeles

Jalen Greene is the No. 11 ranked dual-threat quarterback in the 2014 class according to the 247Sports Composite. He has yet to receive an offer according to 247Sports, so this is going to end up being a big-time camp for him.

He's 6'2'', 185 pounds, and he possesses a very strong arm. He can throw the deep ball or zip a pass out to the sideline, and he also displays good accuracy and touch. Greene has good pocket presence, keeps his eyes downfield and doesn't rush out of his pass-reads.

He can run the ball at a high level; he has good speed, long strides and can also throw on the run.

I expect Greene will pick up a ton of momentum on the recruiting trail with a good showing at this camp.

9. K.J. Carta-Samuels, 4-Star QB, Bellarmine College Prep (CA) *Vanderbilt

2 of 10

Camp: Los Angeles

K.J. Carta-Samuels is a highly ranked quarterback who has already made a commitment to the Vanderbilt Commodores. He has good size at 6'2'', 210 pounds, and he's ranked as the No. 17 ranked pro-style quarterback in the 2014 class according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Carta-Samuels has all the intangibles to be a good quarterback at the college level. He has a strong arm that allows him to throw a solid deep ball, and he can also throw it into tight windows.

He displays solid footwork, good vision as well as the ability to move around in the pocket, quickly reset his feet and throw.

8. Kalen Ballage, 4-Star ATH, Falcon High School (CO)

3 of 10

Camp: Phoenix

Kalen Ballage is a 4-star athlete recruit with incredible speed and potential. He has terrific size at 6'2'', 215 pounds, and he runs a very fast 4.37 according to 247Sports.

Ballage is listed as a running back or wide receiver, and he'll be a good fit at either position depending on the scheme and depth chart where he ends up. He has the size to be a strong runner and the speed to be a mismatch on the edges.

I can see a coach getting creative with him and throwing him in the slot to create mismatches against linebackers, or even use him as an H-back or tight end in different packages.

Either way, Ballage will be one of the premiere recruits in Phoenix this weekend.

The Michigan Wolverines are currently on top of his 247Sports interest list.

7. Joe Mixon, 4-Star ATH/RB, Freedom High School (CA)

4 of 10

Camp: Los Angeles

Joe Mixon is definitely one of the bigger names on the recruiting trail right now, and he'll be a premiere recruit at the Los Angeles camp.

Mixon is ranked as the No. 16 athlete in the 2014 class (247Sports) composite, and he can play either running back or outside linebacker, though he projects best as a running back.

He has good quickness, great agility, footwork and vision. He'll be extremely effective on the edges where he can outrun defenders, and he has the ability to turn it upfield and turn on the proverbial "second gear."

Where he'll really stand out is with his ability to be a receiver out of the backfield. He has good hands and is an effective receiver, so he'll be a great option at the college level leaking out into the flats, being used as a check-down or even split out into the slot.

California, Washington and Oregon (no offer) are currently on top of Mixon's 247Sports interest list.

6. Jamardre Cobb, 4-Star OLB, Salesian High School (CA)

5 of 10

Camp: Los Angeles

Jamardre Cobb is the No. 13 outside linebacker in the 2014 class, and he has elite potential. He checks in at 6'2'', 215 pounds, so he has good size, but he combines that with top-notch speed.

Cobb runs a 4.60 40 according to 247Sports.

He's a linebacker who could end up being a big-time pass-rush specialist at the college level. His speed allows him to close on the quarterback fast, and he has the athleticism and agility to  make plays in pursuit. He'll be comfortable in open space on the edges and should even be able to drop back into coverage and make plays.

That's the best way to describe Cobb: He's a playmaker. That should be on display this weekend.

Some of his notable offers are from Washington State, Stanford, Oklahoma and Boise State.

5. Marquis Ware, 4-Star ATH, Salesian High School (CA)

6 of 10

Camp: Los Angeles

Marquis Ware is the No. 7 athlete in the 2014 class, so he's going to be a big-time recruit at the Los Angeles Camp. He's also one of the marquee recruits from the state of California.

Ware is 6'2'', 215 pounds and can play outside linebacker or tight end.

As a tight end, he displays great hands, leaping ability and he runs crisp routes. He's big and strong enough to overpower defensive backs, and he's hard to tackle after the catch.

That said, he may project best as an outside linebacker, especially since the trend at tight end now suits bigger, faster receiver-esque players.

Ware has the aggressiveness and quickness to play strong off the edge. His size will help him against the run, and he projects to be a good pass-rusher.

Either way, he has great versatility and will be a big recruiting pickup when he does commit.

Oregon and USC are on top of his interest list (247Sports), though he has yet to receive offers from either program. Ware does have notable offers from UCLA, Stanford, Boise State and Texas A&M, among others.

4. Casey Tucker, 4-Star OT, Hamilton High School (AZ) *USC

7 of 10

Camp: Phoenix

Casey Tucker is one of the better offensive lineman recruits in the 2014 class, and he's committed to play for the USC Trojans.

Tucker checks in at 6'6'', 270 pounds, and he's ranked as the No. 8 offensive lineman in the 2014 class (247Sports Composite).

He's going to be one of the more imposing recruits at the Phoenix camp, and he'll definitely be a high profile player considering his commitment to USC.

Look for Tucker to impress with his combination of size and fundamentals. He plays with great leverage as an offensive lineman.

3. Jalen Brown, 4-Star WR, Mountain Pointe High School (AZ)

8 of 10

Camp: Phoenix

Jalen Brown is going to be one of the marquee receiver recruits at the Phoenix camp.

He has great height at 6'2'' and combines that with above average speed, fantastic route-running and a long stride. He's going to be a deep threat at the college level because of his ability to run routes and go up and "high-point" the ball.

Brown also projects to be an elite blocker, which is a point that we don't talk about enough with wide receivers.

He's ranked as the No. 9 wide receiver in the country (247Sports Composite). USC (no offer), Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, Ohio State, Northwestern, Michigan State, Michigan, Arizona State and Arizona are all listed as "warm interests" on his 247Sports interest list.

2. Qualen Cunningham, 4-Star WDE, Hamilton High School (AZ)

9 of 10

Camp: Phoenix

Qualen Cunningham is ranked as the No. 8 weak-side defensive end in the country according to the 247Sports Composite, so he's very much a marquee recruit who will be attending the Rivals camp in Phoenix this weekend.

He has good size at 6'4'', 220 pounds, and he's still just a junior, mind you.

Cunningham has tremendous fundamentals as a pass-rusher and really uses his hands well to disengage his blocker. He has good speed and has the strength to set the edge, but he'll really stand out as a pass-rusher at the second level.

He plays with good intensity, and he uses his length to his advantage.

Texas A&M is currently listed as the favorite on his 247Sports interest list, followed by Arizona State and USC.

1. Michiah Quick, 4-Star WR/ATH, Central East High School (CA)

10 of 10

Camp: Los Angeles

Michiah Quick is an extremely talented wide receiver recruit who can also play cornerback at the college level.

He's 6'0'', 170 pounds, and he's ranked as the No. 2 wide receiver in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He'll undoubtedly be the big-time player at the Los Angeles Rivals camp.

Quick has good size and quickness. He has the ability to make defenders miss after the catch, and he can be a deep threat. He has long strides as a runner and can go up and make a play on the ball. He projects to be a great possession player, especially in the slot where he can get the ball on the run and make a few moves.

Quick could also be utilized as a kick returner, and he can be a more than adequate corner.

UCLA, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Houston and Cal have all made offers to Quick, and I expect more will follow after this camp.
