5 Prospects Picking Up Major Steam on the 2014 Recruiting Trial
Recruiting from a program perspective is all about momentum, but the same could be said from the view of the players.
Recruiting in general can be a study of momentum shifts and swings.
When a program is hot on the field, it tends to play out on the recruiting trail. Once a few elite recruits commit to said program, others tend to follow. It's about a positive trend. Unfortunately, the same is true of negative trends.
From a player's perspective, one great game, highlight tape or combine can really get a bunch of programs looking. Once one major program offers, others tend to follow.
Momentum is key in every aspect of recruiting, so with that in mind, here are five prospects that are picking up some major steam right now.
Kendall Baker, 4-Star SDE Marist School (GA)
1 of 54-star defensive end Kendall Baker from Atlanta, Georgia, finished the last few days of February on a high note.
He went to Florida State's junior day on on Feb. 23rd (already had an offer), and since then the offers have been rolling in from some very notable programs.
Ole Miss was the first to offer, and Auburn offered the next day. The day after that Baker received a big-time offer from the in-state Georgia Bulldogs, and his latest offer came from Boston College.
Baker has great measurables at 6'6'', 275 pounds, and he projects to play defensive end at the college level, even though he can also play offensive guard.
Auburn, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia and Alabama (no offer yet) are all on the top of his 247Sports interest list.
Jordan Sims, N/R OG, Homewood High School (AL)
2 of 5Jordan Sims is unranked as of right now, but that's not stopping him from picking up some major momentum on the recruiting trail.
Part of that may be because of his impressive size and the potential that comes along with it. Sims checks in 6'4'', 325 pounds.
February was a very good month for the unranked guard. He first received an offer from the Vanderbilt Commodores, and other big-time programs followed soon after.
Since then, Sims has picked up offers from Ole Miss, Florida State, UCLA, Alabama, Duke, Auburn, Georgia, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Florida.
That's not to shabby for an unranked recruit.
Alabama is currently on top of his interest list (247Sports), followed by Ole Miss and Vanderbilt.
Richard Yeargin III, 4-Star OLB, University School of Nova South (FL)
3 of 5February has been a big month for 4-star outside linebacker Richard Yeargin III, and he has an offer list to prove it.
Since Feb. 6, Yeargin has picked up offers from West Virginia, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Florida, Boston College, Marshall, Florida State, N.C. State, Massachusetts, Arkansas, South Carolina and Ole Miss.
That's a pretty impressive few weeks for a recruit, and he's undoubtedly one of the more sought after 4-star recruits in the nation right now.
Yeargin III is 6'4'', 225 pounds, and he's the No. 30 outside linebacker in the 2014 class according to the 247Sports Composite. He has good size for an outside linebacker, and has quickness and open field ability. He should be very effective on the edges at the college level, and he'll make a lot of plays in space.
UCLA, Tennessee, Marshall, Georgia Tech, Florida State, Florida, Clemson and Arkansas are all listed as "warm interests" on his 247Sports interest list.
Clifton Garrett, 4-Star OLB, Plainfield South High School (IL)
4 of 5Linebacker Clifton Garrett is arguably one of the most hyped up players on the recruiting trail right now.
He's picking up a ton of offers as of late, and they are coming from some very notable programs.
Garrett has the potential to live up to his hype. He's 6'2'', 228 pounds, and is ranked as the No. 2 outside linebacker in the country according to the 247Sports Composite.
He's an extremely explosive linebacker that will fly to the line, plug his gap and make a strong play on the ball carrier. He has an excellent first step. He's a playmaker with incredible ability and superstar potential at the college level.
With that in mind, this list of offers shouldn't surprise you.
Since January Garrett has picked up offers from Iowa, Kentucky, Clemson, Florida, LSU, Tennessee, Missouri, USC, Virginia Tech, Florida State and Texas A&M.
Ohio State previously made him an offer, and they are currently on top of his 247Sports interest list, followed by Florida, LSU and Ole Miss.
Lorenzo Carter, 5-Star WDE, Norcross High School (GA)
5 of 5Lorenzo Carter is a big-time 5-star defensive end recruit who is seemingly on everybody's radar.
He's 6'6'', 232 pounds, and he can play either defensive end in the 4-3 or outside linebacker in the 3-4. He displays quickness, elite pass rushing abilities and should be very good on the edges of the defense at the college level. Note: Check out my scouting report on Carter.
Carter has been picking up some major steam ever since last December, and that trend is still continuing. Carter has received offers from Notre Dame, Ohio State, Florida, Nebraska, Alabama, Wake Forest, Georgia, Louisville, Auburn, Michigan, N.C. State, Stanford, USC, Texas, UCLA, Kentucky and Ole Miss.
He's ranked as the No. 4 weak-side defensive end in the country and the No. 3 player from the state of Georgia according to the 247Sports Composite.
Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Miami, Mississippi State, Notre Dame, South Carolina, USC and Vanderbilt are all listed as "warm interests" on his 247Sports interest list.
He has superstar potential, so it's not a surprise that so many big-time programs are extending Carter an offer.
