Boise State Football: Broncos Must Take Wait and See Approach with Big East

Steven CookJun 5, 2018

Boise State ended 2012 on a high note by winning the Las Vegas Bowl, but their offseason will end in defeat if they don't back out of the Big East as soon as possible.

As the Big East continues to be crushed before our eyes, Boise State has begun talks to remain in the Mountain West, according to Andy Katz of ESPN.

But time is running out, and a decision that could save their athletic program must be made as soon as possible.

In the most recent heyday of conference realignment, the Broncos' finalized move to the Big East was one of the biggest moves. One of the most dominant non-BCS conference programs was headed to a conference with an automatic BCS bid that was very attainable year in and year out.

All was perfect for Boise State's move before the 2013-14 season. That is, until a four-team playoff was announced.

The new format stripped the Big East of its automatic bid, and much of the conference's strong football programs jumped ship.

As if the deterioration of their new conference wasn't enough to dampen the spirits of the Broncos, the re-emergence of their current and soon-to-be former conference of the Mountain West has to be leaving a bad taste in their fans' mouths.

A new TV deal is expected to make the MWC among the most fruitful non-BCS conferences (per The Washington Post).

Yes, that's right. Boise State's former conference could likely jump their future conference right as the Broncos make the switch.

It could not be more obvious what Boise State needs to do.

The departure of Louisville to the ACC and Rutgers to the Big Ten was enough to prove that the Big East is moving further and further away from football dominance. The loss of the Catholic 7 just puts salt in the wounds of this once proud conference.

A move to the Big East was a sure-fire solid move back when the Broncos made it official, but times change. In an industry like this where so much is on the line, people have to change with the times.

Boise State's upcoming decision to stay in the MWC or continue their move to the Big East will prove what type of hands this program is in.
