College Football's Most Overrated and Underrated Top 25 Clashes of Week 14
We saw some electric Top-25 battles in Week 13 of the 2012-2013 college football campaign, including Oklahoma's overtime win over Oklahoma State, Florida's dispatching of Florida State and Ohio State's narrow victory over Michigan.
Week 14 features a couple conference championship games and some regular-season contests that are sure to send a chill (and a thrill) up your spine.
Whether you are an SEC fan, Pac-12 fan, Big 12 fan or Big Ten fan, Week 14 offers a little bit of something for everyone.
Here's a look at the most overrated and underrated clashes involving Top 25 teams.
Overrated: No. 16 UCLA at No. 8 Stanford
1 of 5Hey, I admire what UCLA did to USC, but last week's loss to Stanford in Pasadena told us what we already knew: The Cardinal simply have an excellent defense this season.
And with the Pac-12 Championship Game being held in Stanford, I don't see how you can say UCLA will beat the Cardinal when the Bruins were defeated at home last week, 35-17.
Last week, UCLA running back Jonathan Franklin was shut down (65 yards, 21 carries), while quarterback Brett Hundley averaged 6.9 yards per pass attempt and tossed one touchdown to one interception.
Meanwhile, UCLA's run defense, which has struggled all season long, wasn't able to contain Stanford running back Stepfan Taylor, who blistered his way to 142 yards and two touchdown on just 20 carries.
Stanford's defense has gotten better as the season has progressed, and freshman quarterback Kevin Hogan has been efficient.
Underrated: No. 23 Oklahoma State at Baylor
2 of 5Anyone who saw Baylor's performance against Kansas State last week knows this team has the offense to do some damage.
But what isn't being talked about is the ball-hawking ability of the Bears' pass defense over the past two games.
Oklahoma State's rushing attack, complete with junior John Randle, will be a chore to stop for Baylor on Saturday, but the Bears forced Kansas State's Collin Klein into three interceptions two weeks ago and forced Texas Tech's Seth Doege into three interceptions last week, one that was returned 55 yards for a touchdown by Eddie Lackey.
Oklahoma State junior quarterback Clint Chelf has thrown three picks in his last four games.
Overrated: No. 18 Texas at No. 6 Kansas State
3 of 5Kansas State's flop against Baylor two weeks ago has some believing that Texas has a chance on Saturday in Kansas.
But not only did Texas lose to TCU last week, 20-13, the Longhorns don't have the run defense to stop Kansas State's rushing attack.
The Wildcats have averaged 201.1 rushing yards per game this season, 31st in the country. Equipped with dual-threat quarterback Collin Klein and junior running back John Hubert, they run the ball and they run the ball well.
Texas is allowing 4.92 yards per carry this season (104th in the FBS, via CFBStats.com) and just allowed TCU to rush for 217 yards and two touchdowns last week.
The Longhorns will not be able to stop the run, and that will be the difference.
Underrated: No. 12 Nebraska vs. Wisconsin
4 of 5Nebraska has had trouble stopping the run this season and Wisconsin star Montee Ball just rushed for 111 yards and a touchdown against Penn State last week.
There's reason numero uno why you need to watch the Big Ten championship game on Saturday.
There's also the fact that Wisconsin hasn't allowed more than 14 points in regulation since Sept. 29, when the Badgers lost a squeaker to the Cornhuskers, 30-27.
Some believe that the Badgers' passing game will ultimately be their undoing, but senior quarterback Curt Phillips hasn't been as bad as some claim the past two games.
While Phillips went 12-of-25 in the 24-21 overtime loss to Penn State last week, he also averaged 7.6 yards per pass attempt and tossed two touchdowns to one interception, actually outplaying Penn State's Matt McGloin.
He also led that comeback drive against Ohio State two weeks ago, sending the game into overtime.
Underrated: No. 11 Oklahoma at TCU
5 of 5While Oklahoma certainly doesn't have a one-dimensional offense, the Sooners like the throw the ball a lot. Landry Jones has 467 attempts this season, tied for eighth in the nation.
Why is that important?
Well, ever since TCU's 36-14 loss to Oklahoma State on Oct. 27, the Horned Frogs have been much better against the pass.
They held West Virginia's Geno Smith to 4.8 yards per pass attempt, limited Kansas State's Collin Klein to 6.9 yards per attempt while recording an interception and held Texas' Case McCoy and David Ash to a combined 5.6 yards per attempt while registering three picks.
And when Oklahoma does try to run?
The Horned Frogs have allowed 3.07 yards per carry (tied for seventh in the nation) and nine rushing touchdowns (tied for ninth) this season.
