College Football: Top 5 Upsets to Watch for in Week 13
With only two weeks remaining in college football's regular season, top teams in the nation are battling for a spot in one of five BCS games.
Rivalry games take center stage this weekend including the Notre Dame Fighting Irish traveling to the West Coast to take on the USC Trojans.
Wins are paramount at this point in the season for all highly-ranked teams.
Here are the top five upsets to watch for this weekend.
Michigan over Ohio State
1 of 5If Michigan fans had forgotten what phenomenal throws look like, Devin Gardner reminded them last week by accounting for six touchdowns against Iowa.
But incumbent starter Denard Robinson is ready to play according to Everett Cook of the Detroit Free Press. This could be fantastic news for the Wolverines because the senior quarterback torched Ohio State for five touchdowns last year.
It was the first time Michigan defeated the Buckeyes since 2003, but the Wolverines haven't won in Columbus since 2000.
Though head coach Brady Hoke has kept quiet about naming a starter for "The Game," he has two great options. Offensive coordinator Al Borges is thrilled to get creative using both his weapons, according to Mark Snyder also of the Free Press.
Braxton Miller has led Ohio State to an 11-0 record and would likely be the second-ranked team in the nation had the Buckeyes self-imposed a bowl ban last season.
Speed will be abundant at The Horseshoe, and Michigan is looking to pull the upset.
Oregon State over Oregon
2 of 5ESPN's Kevin Gemmell points out that Oregon can still win the North Division, but the Beavers are out of the running for the Pac-12 Championship Game.
In the other big-game conference of the week, the Stanford Cardinal take on the UCLA Bruins in a game that could potentially result in a rematch six days later.
Should the Ducks take out Oregon State and the Bruins beat Stanford, Chip Kelly's crew will earn a spot in the conference championship on November 30.
But the Beavers want a share of the division title, and it doesn't get much better for a team than to deny its rival an extra game.
The Ducks could be feeling the effects of a painful overtime loss to Stanford, and Oregon State has a phenomenal chance to pull an upset.
Watch for a fast-paced game in Corvallis at 3:30 on Saturday.
Florida over Florida State
3 of 5When will the top teams from the state of Florida be back?
Well, two of the three teams are pretty much there.
The favored Florida State Seminoles "welcome" the Florida Gators to Tallahassee in a game with big implications for the team from Gainesville.
As BCS rules state that only two teams from a single conference can play in their games, Florida must win to stay in position to reach a top bowl.
The Gators also have an outside shot at the BCS National Championship as the fourth-ranked team in the BCS, and two top-ranked teams could lose as last week proved. Florida must defeat the rival Seminoles to remain in contention.
Florida State, on the other hand, has clinched a spot in the ACC Championship Game against the third-best Coastal Division team in the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.
Unless the Seminoles' defense capitalizes on a streaky Florida offense, this game will be a hard-fought battle down to the wire.
Missouri over Texas A&M
4 of 5The Missouri Tigers need one more win to become bowl-eligible, but a tough Texas A&M team stands in the way.
Missouri was supposed to be a contending team in its first year in the SEC, but a 5-6 record defines the disappointing debut.
Gary Pinkel takes his team to College Station to face the 9-2 Aggies in the final regular-season game for both teams.
Quarterback James Franklin is a game-time decision according to ESPN's Edward Aschoff, but the junior has a chance to finish 2012 on a high note should he start.
But that Johnny Manziel guy is pretty good, so it won't be easy for the Tigers.
Manziel has quickly become the front-runner for the Heisman Trophy, and one final win would help his already impressive resume.
USC over Notre Dame
5 of 5Similar to Missouri and Texas A&M, this game was supposed to be headlined the opposite way.
Preseason top prospect and preseason Heisman favorite Matt Barkley led preseason No. 1 USC into the 2012 campaign.
Notice that trend?
Well, this now vastly underrated Notre Dame team has quietly made its way to the top of the polls for the first time since 1993.
Barkley was injured in last week's loss to UCLA, so freshman Max Wittek makes his first career start for the Trojans. Earlier this week, Wittek said that USC will beat the Irish, noted ESPN's Pedro Moura.
While some people may have a problem with that statement, what else was he supposed to say?
The Trojans are still a talented team and Notre Dame has a constant habit of playing to its opponent's level—albeit USC's level isn't too far down.
Watch for this 8 p.m. game on Saturday night, and it should be a great one.
