Boruc's Home Attacked by Thugs, Scum, and the Dregs of Society

Andy MuirheadMar 17, 2009

Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc’s home was attacked on Sunday night by thugs just hours after Celtic’s Cup Final victory over rivals Rangers twice.

The Polish star’s plush mansion was first attacked before the player returned to his home. A brick was thrown through the bathroom window.

A second attack occured at 1 a.m. while the Polish goalie watched TV with friends at his house in Bearsden, near Glasgow.

His girlfriend, Sara Mannei, was in the house and a three-year-old girl was asleep in a bedroom.

Boruc’s close friend and adviser David McDonald said he, too, had been in the house when the second attack took place.

McDonald added, “We were watching Spanish football in the living room when we heard a loud crash, obviously a window smashing. We went through and saw a huge brick had been put through the glass."

"It wasn’t a normal brick. It was something they had taken from the garden and much bigger. It would have taken the kind of effort to throw a shot putt to lift it and put it through the window. If the brick had hit anyone inside the house, it would have killed them outright."

"These people attacked the house indiscriminately and didn’t care about the consequences."

"We looked out the window and looked around the house but whoever did it had gone. I wouldn’t say Artur was terrified, but he is hugely concerned just now and doesn’t want any kind of repeat.”

McDonald had watched the game at Hampden before returning to his own home and arranging to meet Artur in Bearsden later.

He said, “I spoke to Artur on the phone and he told me a bathroom window had been done by the time he got home. The bathroom is at the back. Whoever did it must have prowled around a bit."

"Artur can handle abuse from Rangers fans while he is playing and there will be the odd time when people may say something in the street. But this is something else altogether."

"It is an attack on his house, and no one should be subjected to anything like this. Whoever did this should be locked up. It was a nasty and premeditated attack. A three-year-old was sleeping in the house at the time.”

McDonald said police took almost two hours to turn up at Boruc’s home to take a statement. He said, “They said they were really busy. It took until after 2 AM for them to turn up and they spend half an hour taking a statement from me.”

He added, “Artur already has proper security measures at home, but he will be thinking about increasing them now. He is a character on the field but he’s a very down to earth, decent guy.”

This is only the latest in a series of attacks involved Old Firm stars in the aftermath of derby matches in recent years.

Former Celtic manager Martin O’Neill’s garden was attacked by thugs, and Celtic coach Neil Lennon was knocked unconscious after being attacked by two Rangers fans in August. Both attackers were convicted and jailed last month.

Aiden McGeady was attacked in a nightclub in the City centre by thugs also.

It is not all aimed at Celtic staff, however.

Rangers goalie Allan McGregor’s car was twice attacked by vandals. Striker Nacho Novo received death threats from thugs. He also had his street address published on a Web site, promptly Rangers to beef up security round Novo’s house.

Whatever allegiances these players have and whatever club they play for, they should never have to fear for the safety of themselves or their family in their own home.

These thugs, these scum, and these dregs of society must be weeded out and punished severely.

Such attacks shame Scottish Football as a whole and whatever club these thugs support they are not football fans. They cannot claim to be football fans if they act in this manner. They are pure and simply scum, criminals, cowards and the dregs of our society.

And whoever celebrates such an attack is also within their company, what would you have sad if the wee three-year-old lassie had been hit with the brick?

Would you be cheering them, would you be celebrating, or patting the back of the scum who did this?

Maybe you would, and in our opinion, you would be scum also.

Also that night a Celtic fan was left fighting for his life after a brutal street attack hours after watching the win over Rangers in the CIS Cup Final. Kevin McCaig was rushed to hospital after being found with serious head injuries on Sunday night.

McCaig, from Wishaw, Lanarkshire, had been drinking in the town’s Cross Keys Inn when it is understood he became involved in a scuffle on his way home. He was found unconscious at around 11:30 p.m. in Stewarton Street before being rushed to Wishaw General Hospital.

Hospital staff described his condition as being “serious”.

His mother Geraldine, father William, and brother Alan, 27, spent the night at his hospital bedside. Dad William spoke of their shock.

He said, “Kevin is a very quiet guy and has never been in any sort of trouble before. This has come as a total shock to us and everyone who knows him. Doctors are having to carry out brain scans on him to see the extent of the damage.”
