Spain vs. France: Score, Highlights and Grades

Ryan RudnanskyJun 7, 2018

Spain was well on its way to victory on Tuesday when the unthinkable happened.

Leading 1-0 in the final minute of regulation, Spain coughed up the ball, setting up an Oliver Giroud header into net that equalized the match at 1-1 and left Spain and France tied atop Group I in World Cup qualifying play.

A big play came for Spain came in the 25th minute when Sergio Ramos headed the ball off the post. Pedro then swung the ball back to him for a goal in front of net.

Ramos was actually clutching his head in despair after the miss, but warmly embraced another chance to make it right.

But after sound defense throughout the match, France roared back in the final minute, with Franck Ribery notching the assist off a cross.

Highlights

Sergio Ramos got the action started for Spain when he was given a second chance in the 25th minute.

Here's a look at Jeremy Menez's disallowed goal in the 39th minute before the half.

With time ticking and France's chances looking dim in the last minute, Franck Ribery found Olivier Giroud on a cross for a sensational header to equalize and shock Spain.

Grades for Key Spain Players

Sergio Ramos: A

Sergio Ramos got a break when his header off the post in the 25th minute ricocheted back to his teammate, Pedro, who swung it back to him in front of goal.

Ramos didn't miss his second attempt, swinging the ball into the right corner.

Iker Casillas: B

Iker Casillas didn't need to stop much, but he did what he was asked to do, and you can't blame him for getting scored on off of Juanfran's cheap giveaway.

Spain's defense overall was solid, except, well, for that last minute in regulation.

Juanfran: D

Juanfran may have played OK throughout regulation, but you simply cannot give away the ball cheaply in the final minute with your side up 1-0.

Juanfran made a critical error and Spain paid for it dearly.

Grades for Key France Players

Hugo Lloris: B+

Lloris did well to keep Spain at bay after the first goal on Tuesday, keeping his side within reach for the miraculous comeback.

Jeremy Menez: B-

Jeremy Menez scored what looked like a legitimate goal in this match, but a questionable offsides call ruled it out.

Can't exactly fault Menez for that and the main thing is that he threatened at goal.

Olivier Giroud: A

When you sub in and save your team, you get an "A." What a fantastic way to end the match for France after Giroud subbed in and all appeared lost.
