World Football's Biggest Scandals

World football, like life, sometimes gets messy. The messiness applies both on and off the pitch.

Like any other sport or any other walk of life, football has a long history with scandal. Over the years, the sport and its most famous players have built an impressive list of misdeeds, bad behavior and illegal activity.

For our purposes, we’re focusing on three categories.

First, there’s the old-fashioned sex scandal. For whatever reason, footballers and prostitutes have become an inseparable combination in the modern game. Plenty of sex scandals have plagued football, from John Terry to Wayne Rooney to Ronaldo (Brazilian Ronaldo, that is, not the current-day Portuguese superstar).

Second, there are the drugs. And if we’re talking footballers and illegal substances, there’s no better place to start than Argentine legend Diego Maradona. The World Cup winner and scorer of the famous Hand of God goal was busted for cocaine in 1991 and ephedrine at the 1994 World Cup

Finally, there’s match-fixing, a practice that has seemed to plague one country more than any other. But even when match-fixing scandals rocked Italy in 1982 and 2006, they preceded success for the national team.
