5 College Football Week 2 Point Spreads That Are on the Move

Jeff GrantJun 1, 2018

Successful sports handicappers are always trying to stay a step ahead which often comes down to being on the right side of a line move. It never hurts to have an extra point or two on your ticket in comparison to those that simply wager before kickoff.

The Week 2 college football odds (courtesy of SBR Forum) will not move as much as the previous week, simply for the fact that those numbers were readily available in the market for months.

Let's take a closer look at five lines that have changed rather significantly since they were released on Sunday afternoon.

North Carolina Tar Heels vs. Wake Forest Demon Deacons

1 of 5

The North Carolina Tar Heels must have impressed a lot of people with their 62-0 drubbing of the Elon Phoenix as 32.5-point home favorites in the opening week, as they've been heavily backed in the first four days of the betting market this week.

Sports bettors are ignoring the fact that the home team is 5-1 against the spread (ATS) in the last six meetings in this series, but perhaps, they're showing faith in first-year head coach Larry Fedora, who landed in Chapel Hill after spending the last few years at Southern Miss.

Despite getting outgained by 70 yards last week, the Wake Forest Demon Deacons escaped with a 20-17 win over Liberty as 25.5-point home favorites, which could be an early signal of trouble for Jim Grobe's program the rest of the way.

Be careful in riding along with this line move, as the Demon Deacons are 3-1 ATS as a home underdog of 7.5 to 14 points the last two-plus years.

Opening Line: North Carolina Tar Heels -7.5

Current Line: North Carolina Tar Heels -10.5

No. 11 Michigan State Spartans vs. Central Michigan Chippewas

2 of 5

The Michigan State Spartans failed to cover the spread in their 17-13 home victory over the Boise State Broncos as 8.5-point home favorites last Friday night, but they dominated the game by winning the statistical battle by 255 yards.

Running back Le'Veon Bell was one of the more visually-impressive players in the opening week, which leads to grabbing the attention of the betting public.

The Spartans are now preparing for the biggest sandwich game of the week, as they get set to host the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on September 15.

It's obvious to me that big money has caught wind of this situation, causing a significant 3.5-point move at most spots in the market.

Opening Line: Michigan State Spartans -24

Current Line: Michigan State Spartans -20.5

23. Florida Gators vs. Texas A&M Aggies

3 of 5

Getting to host ESPN's College GameDay certainly moves the needle on a college football odds board, which is something that I explained when the Florida Gators went from slight favorites to underdogs on late Sunday.

The line moved 3.5 points in a seven-minute span after the network announced that its popular show would invade College Station, but the line has moved very little since.

Sports bettors may ignore the hype, especially since the Gators have won their last seven road openers, with each of those contests coming against Southeastern Conference opponents.

Opening Line: Florida Gators -1

Current Line: Texas A&M Aggies -1

7. Georgia Bulldogs vs. Missouri Tigers

4 of 5

The Georgia Bulldogs seem to have everything going for them heading into their Southeastern Conference opener against the Missouri Tigers, but the reverse line movement through a key number (three) is a major warning sign for Saturday.

I'm guessing that sharp money is fading the Bulldogs due to their 1-7 ATS record with a line of +3 to -3 over the last two-plus seasons, as they certainly aren't buying up Gary Pinkel's 6-11 ATS record as a home underdog.

If anything, this type of move is always important to monitor over the course of a season.

Opening Line: Georgia Bulldogs -3.5

Current Line: Georgia Bulldogs -2

16. Oklahoma State Cowboys vs. Arizona Wildcats

5 of 5

Casual sports bettors will forget that the Oklahoma State Cowboys played Savannah State last week, as they will fall in love with the 84 points they put up on the scoreboard.

Despite being one of the more heavily backed teams in Week 2, the Cowboys are barely holding on as a double-digit road favorite in the betting market.

I don't anticipate this number falling any lower, considering the visitor is 20-7-1 ATS in its last 28 trips away from Stillwater.

Opening Line: Oklahoma State Cowboys -13.5

Current Line: Oklahoma State -10.5
