College Football Week 2 Predictions: Top 25 Teams That Will Squeak by Saturday

Patrick ClarkeJun 7, 2018

As Week 1 comes to a close and the cream puffs begin to fade from the top teams' schedules, college football fans are in store for some much closer matchups this weekend.

Week 2's slate of games features a handful of clashes between ranked teams and relatively underrated programs capable of pulling off the upset, or at least coming close.

Let's take a look at the AP Top 25 teams that will just barely squeak by on Saturday.

No. 11 Michigan State

One week after earning a hard-fought win over Boise State in East Lansing, the No. 11-ranked Spartans will travel to Mount Pleasant to take on Central Michigan on the road.

Although at first glance this matchup looks like a cakewalk for Michigan State, I can assure you that nothing will come easy for the Spartans.

Quarterback Andrew Maxwell looked extremely shaky against Boise last Friday night, throwing not one, not two but three interceptions to the Broncos defense.

Another concern for the Spartans will be Central Michigan's seventh-ranked rushing attack. The Chippewas ran for 324 yards in their season opener last weekend, and will be difficult to contain on Saturday.

Michigan State may be the 11th-best team in the nation according to the AP Top 25 rankings, but they will just barely squeak by on the road in Week 2.

No. 17 Texas

The Longhorns won't be celebrating a blowout in Week 2, that's for sure.

Texas will host New Mexico on Saturday, just one week after looking extremely vulnerable against Wyoming. Texas won 37-17 over the Cowboys at home.

Meanwhile, the Lobos are coming off a 66-21 win over Southern University in Week 1. New Mexico rushed for 347 yards in the win, ranking them third in the country in terms of rush offense.

Their 66 points scored also makes them the nation's fourth highest scoring offense at the moment. The lesson to be learned here is that New Mexico is for real, ladies and gentlemen.

Although the Mountain West Conference often flies under the radar and pales in comparison to the Big 12, the Longhorns are teetering towards overrated this September.

No. 25 Stanford

As the Cardinal proved in their underwhelming win over San Jose State in Week 1, Andrew Luck makes a huge difference.

Stanford barely survived the Spartans, winning 20-17 and setting up a tight battle of 1-0s on Saturday night against Duke.

It should be noted that they will again be without Luck on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Blue Devils are coming off an impressive 20-point win over Florida International last weekend, and could make this game very interesting with their offensive firepower.

Duke's QB-WR combination of Sean Renfree and Conner Vernon is a lethal one. Renfree threw for 290 yards in Week 1, while Vernon caught 10 balls for 180 yards and a score.

San Jose State gained almost 100 more yards through the air than Stanford last week, which suggests Duke boasts the more threatening aerial attack this weekend.

I'm not calling an upset, but Stanford will struggle at home for the second week in a row.
