College Football Recruiting: The Top 8 Most Loyal and Devout Recruits of 2013
A problem in recruiting that I have is when a recruit commits to a coach rather than the program and university. Coaches up and leave at the drop of a dime these days, and it is sad to me to see a player commit because of a coach, only to see that coach leave and now that player decommits from the program.
Being loyal and devout to a school and the football program is where your commitment should be strongest. I know relationships with coaches are crucial, and yes, they should factor in a decision. However, when coming to a final decision, a recruit should ask himself, "would I still want to go to school and play here if coach (insert name here) left?"
In this read, here are the top eight recruits that are not wavering in their commitments, carrying their school flags proudly on the recruiting trail and are devout recruits.
8. Kailo Moore, RB
1 of 8Commitment: Mississippi State
I thought Moore was going to wait to announce his decision later on in the cycle, perhaps closer to Signing Day. However, it seems like he knew MSU is where he wanted to go, and more importantly, where his family wanted him at.
Don't look for Moore to come close to back off his Bulldog pledge, folks.
7. Carl Lawson, DE
2 of 8Commitment: Auburn
Lawson is among the top 10-15 prospects in the country and comes from Georgia. Basically, he doesn't give Georgia and Georgia Tech the time of day because he's so solid to Auburn.
In fact, I doubt Lawson takes any trips this fall to other schools. Look for him to continue recruiting for Auburn at the postseason All-Star games.
6. Ahmad Fulwood, WR
3 of 8Commitment: Florida
Fulwood is a silky and lanky 6'4", 200-pound WR from Jacksonville and is headed to Gainsville to catch balls next year. He is a devout Gator commit and has helped recruit other players to Florida, per Scout.com.
Fulwood practically went to Friday Night Lights more to recruit for Florida than to showcase his skills as a WR. He's not wavering or going anywhere, Gator fans.
5. Max Browne, QB
4 of 8Commitment: USC
Browne has already become the leader of the 2013 USC recruiting class. Aside from being one of the headliners, Browne has already gotten the respect of his fellow Trojan commits and has also helped USC recruit too.
From Seattle, Browne is on track to enroll at USC early and make Los Angeles his home. Trojan fans surely have nothing to worry about in terms of a de-commitment from Browne due to his devout enthusiasm for USC football.
4. Kelvin Taylor, RB
5 of 8Commitment: Florida
Taylor was literally born to play at Florida as his father, Fred, was a Gator RB in the mid-1990s. There was no pressure from his father, but people in the Sunshine State knew it was a done deal that Kelvin was Gator material all the way.
The state of Florida's all-time leading rusher, I'd be shocked to the core if Taylor even wavered at all from his Florida commitment. This is set in stone, and has been so since birth.
3. Malik Zaire, QB
6 of 8Commitment: Notre Dame
You have to love Notre Dame strongly if you commit there knowing that Everett Golson and Gunner Kiel will be your competition. Yet Zaire did just that, and he has not wavered in his commitment whatsoever.
Zaire has also been an active recruiter for Notre Dame, making trips to South Bend and acting as a de-facto host to accompany uncommitted recruits. He may face stiff competition for playing time, but Zaire is extremely loyal to the Irish program.
2. Adam Breneman, TE
7 of 8Commitment: Penn State
Breneman committed to Penn State in the aftermath of the Jerry Sandusky scandal at his own will. Then, when the sanctions came down, he had a chance to back out and no one would have blamed him.
He remained solid and firm in his commitment and has helped keep most of the 2013 Nittany Lions class together. Tack that on with rehabbing a torn ACL, and you see why Penn State is so fired up to have 6'5", 230-pound TE coming into the program.
Breneman's recruitment has been nothing short of a pure example of loyalty.
1. Shane Morris, QB
8 of 8Commitment: Michigan
It's become a common theme that anytime I research a prospect's recruitment and see that they are interested in Michigan, Shane Morris has already spoken to them. Morris has done nearly as much recruiting for the Wolverines as the coaching staff has.
A charismatic QB that is one of the elite prospects at his position this year, Morris a cemented and devout Michigan pledge that has willingly carried the Big Blue Football flag on the trail at every camp and combine he's been to.
He's the future face of the program and has already established himself as the leader of Brady Hoke's 2013 class, and everyone knows it.
Edwin Weathersby has worked in scouting/player personnel departments for three professional football teams, including the New York Giants, Cleveland Browns and the Las Vegas Gladiators of the Arena League. He spent a year evaluating prep prospects and writing specific recruiting and scouting content articles for Student Sports Football (now ESPN Rise-HS). A syndicated scout and writer, he's also contributed to WeAreSC.com, GatorBait.net and Diamonds in the Rough Inc., a College Football and NFL Draft magazine.
