Fantasy Football Sleepers 2012: Overhyped Sleepers Sure to Doom Your Squad

Rick WeinerJun 7, 2018

Making selections early in your fantasy football draft is pretty easy—you're taking the best player on the board based on what starting spots you need to fill.

But as the rounds tick off and you reach double digits, that's when owners try and outsmart each other, looking for that sleeper pick who will lead their team to victory.

Everyone has a list of sleepers to target late in the draft, but how many of these guys really pan out?

Here are a handful of players to avoid at all costs when your pick comes up after the 10th round—unless, of course, your goal is to lose as many games as possible this season.

Justin Blackmon, WR, Jacksonville Jaguars

1 of 5

Unless you are in a keeper league and can pick Blackmon up late in your draft with the intention of keeping him for a few years, the talented rookie isn't worthy of your consideration in 2012.

Whether it's Blaine Gabbert or Chad Henne under center in Jacksonville, neither one has shown the ability to successfully lead a high powered aerial attack. Consider this—Jacksonville's leading receiver in 2011 was tight end Marcedes Lewis, who finished the year with 460 yards receiving.

Mike Thomas led all wide receivers with 415 yards receiving.

Blackmon has the talent to blow those numbers out of the water but his quarterbacks do not.

Michael Crabtree, WR, San Francisco 49ers

2 of 5

Sure, Michael Crabtree finished last season with nine catches for 177 yards and two touchdowns over the last two weeks of the season, but don't let the numbers fool you.

An average receiver at best, on a team whose quarterback, Alex Smith, isn't a great passer isn't the best pick you can make in your draft.

Now throw Vernon Davis, Mario Manningham and Randy Moss into the mix and tell me, where exactly are Crabtree's chances going to come from?

He's the third or fourth option as far as the receiving corps go, and we haven't even discussed how Frank Gore and Brandon Jacobs are going to get their fair share of touches coming out of the backfield as well.

Avoid Crabtree at all costs—even as a bye week replacement, you can find options with bigger upside than him.

Matt Flynn, QB, Seattle Seahawks

3 of 5

Matt Flynn got a multi-million dollar contract from the Seahawks based on a Week 17 performance where he went insane, throwing for 480 yards and six touchdowns. Other than that, he's never taken a significant amount of snaps in the NFL.

Remember Kevin Kolb when he left the Eagles for the Cardinals? How'd that pick turn out for you? I know I got burned.

Flynn has Kolb written all over him.

On a team with questionable receiving targets and a rookie QB in Russell Wilson who very well could be the starter at some point this season, Kol..I mean, Flynn isn't worth your time on draft day.

Randy Moss, WR, San Francisco 49ers

4 of 5

Stop me if you've heard this one before. Randy Moss goes to a team that doesn't have a big-time quarterback running an offense where he's the focal point...I think you know how this story ends.

Moss may have mellowed out at the age of 35, but he's a 35-year-old receiver who is sure to have lost a step or two from his heyday with the Vikings and his resurgence with the Patriots.

Alex Smith (I feel like I'm picking on him at this point) isn't a big-time quarterback and with multiple options on offense, Moss isn't going to see the ball nearly half as much as he needs to in order to be effective.

Take a flier on Moss if you must based on his name alone, but don't say I didn't warn you when you drop him for someone else after Week 2.

Mark Sanchez, QB, New York Jets

5 of 5

There's a reason that Mark Sanchez is sliding to the end of fantasy drafts, if he's drafted at all—he's not that good,.

Now in his fourth season, Sanchez has yet to show that he's able to consistently make good decisions with the ball in his hands—turnovers are a killer for a fantasy QB.

After Santonio Holmes, who is Sanchez throwing the ball to exactly? Dustin Keller is an average tight end at best, and chances are that he'll need to be kept on the line to block considering that after Nick Mangold and D'Brickashaw Ferguson, the Jets linemen aren't exactly world class.

Shonn Greene is about as overrated a running back as there is in the league, so Rex Ryan's promise to bring back the "ground and pound" to the Jets offense only means that Sanchez will see eight men in the box and a pass rush that doesn't stop.

While you surely weren't considering Sanchez as your starter, he's not a wise selection as your backup either.

And while we're at it, avoid Tim Tebow as well. Nobody, Tebow included, has any clue what the Jets have planned for him.
