College Football: 10 New Uniforms to Look Forward to Seeing on the Field
Nothing can hype up a fanbase like a fresh set of new uniforms, and in the 2012-13 season, fans will be treated to a slew of new jerseys.
While some of the new uniforms we have seen in recent years have been disasters (see Maryland's "Pride" jerseys last season), others have gained a huge following and received praise.
What players are wearing on the field may not have a huge effect on the final score, but they have proven to have an effect on recruiting and may be the first step in ushering a new era.
Here are 10 college football uniforms fans can look forward to seeing in action on the gridiron this season.
TCU Horned Frogs
1 of 10Fans complained about the changes made to the uniforms last year, and and the people behind TCU's jerseys took notice.
The new improvements include: deep purple and silver helmets with a scale look, a newly integrated two-tone color scheme and an alternate uniform (far right in the picture) that is a solid anthracite color.
It looks like Nike hit the nail on the head with the new uniforms this year. Hopefully the TCU faithful will agree.
Maryland Terrapins
2 of 10When Maryland debuted their new uniforms last year, many argued that they were among the worst in college football history.
With these new uniforms, they have toned down the exuberance and went with a new, standard look.
While it is a toned down look, Under Armour still found a way to integrate the theme of state pride that the last jerseys were meant to display.
However, the teams "Pride" uniforms worn against Miami (Fla.) last year are still scheduled to be in the rotation.
Get the Advil ready.
Will these jerseys get a better reaction in 2012 when the Terrapins take the field?
Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles
3 of 10Southern Mississippi decided to step in a time machine for the uniforms they will wear during the teams homecoming game against Marshall on October 20.
The uniforms look sharp, especially when accompanied by the yellow helmet with USM on the side.
While they are only scheduled to be used in the homecoming game, athletic director Jeff Hammond said the team may use them multiple times next season.
Northwestern Wildcats
4 of 10Did you know Northwestern was the first team to implement a jersey with stripes?
In 2012, the Wildcats are paying homage to that simple but powerful accent. "Reclain the Stripe" is the theme of Northwestern's jerseys in 2012.
Under Armour captured the theme perfectly.
The jerseys will surely set the Wildcats apart from their opponents on the field and may be one of the best new additions of the 2012-13 season.
Oklahoma State Cowboys
5 of 10Oklahoma State is one of the few schools who can benefit from having black as an actual school color.
As you can see, they take full advantage of this in the sleek, all black uniform. Even the white jersey and white helmet combo looks great.
Combinations will be endless for the Cowboys in 2012. They have four selections of both jerseys and pants and have three different helmet colors.
While fans may still be reeling over the loss of Brandon Weeden and Justin Blackmon, at least they can find some solace in their stylish new unis.
Wisconsin Badgers
6 of 10The Wisconsin Badgers may be the clear frontrunner for worst new jerseys this season.
“Our whole team is very excited and really looking forward to wearing these new and unique uniforms on Sept. 29 at Nebraska,” Badgers coach Bret Bielema said.
He may be stretching the truth a little there.
The "W" is a main theme, being placed prominently on the front of the jersey and on the helmet. It is meant to pay homage to the 1962 Big Ten championship team, which is celebrating its 50th year anniversary this season.
These uniforms are only scheduled to be worn for one game, but for that one game, the Badgers may be wearing the ugliest uniforms seen this year.
Minnesota Golden Gophers
7 of 10The Minnesota Golden Gopher players are excited about their new uniforms, and rightly so.
While there has not been major jersey changes, the matte helmets are what have people talking.
"SKI-U-MAH" will also be be printed on the back of the helmets.
The Gophers did a good job of keeping the uniforms fresh, while also keeping the traditional elements.
As director of equipment operations Kyle Gergely said, “With the black accents and the textured finish, it’s a modern twist on an old-school look.”
Missouri Tigers
8 of 10The Missouri Tigers will be spending their first year in the Southeastern Conference next season, and hopefully some snazzy new uniforms will help with the transition.
""The University of Missouri brand is one that stands for pride, integrity, social responsibility and hard work, but until now, our visual identity has been inconsistent across various sports," Don Barnes, Director of Equipment Operations, said in the release.
"With Nike's help, we have been able to develop brand guidelines that honor our traditions and also reinforce consistency across all athletics. It was important to keep the Tiger at the forefront while creating consistency across our colors, fonts and numbering, and we take great pride in unveiling the first five teams today that embody these important changes."
"
What makes the uniform is the giant tiger on the side of the helmets. The Tigers will be one of the best looking teams on the field during the 2012-13 season, week in and week out.
""
Rutgers Scarlet Knights
9 of 10The Rutgers Scarlet Knights look like royalty in their new Nike Pro Combat uniforms.
"“The new look for Rutgers Football is a clean, modern style that our student-athletes, recruits and fans will be very impressed with,” said Rutgers Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tim Pernetti. “Nike, along with our football staff, did an amazing job of incorporating our history, mascot, and our most valuable asset, the Block R, while designing a uniform that will generate incredible excitement. This was a process that lasted over a year with tremendous input from both Kyle Flood and Greg Schiano.”
"
The chrome finish on the helmets is a nice touch and will look especially sleek with the all-black uniforms.
Oregon Ducks
10 of 10Would any uniform list be complete without the Oregon Ducks?
The alma mater of Phil Knight, co-founder and chairman of Nike, Oregon is the college football team who made having countless uniforms options a trend.
The Ducks are expected to sport these new uniforms in black, white, yellow and of course, green.
The question on everyone's mind is if we will see the chrome domes along with these new uniforms this season.
What jerseys are you looking forward to seeing on the field during the 2012-13 college football season? Did we leave any out?
