Manchester United Held to a Draw by Inter Milan in Champions League Action

Daniel GoochFeb 24, 2009

Champions of England, Europe, and the Planet, Manchester United, have been held to a draw to Inter Milan in the Champions League at the San Siro.

Looking at the United line up, it looked as if they were going to attack. That's exactly what happened, as Cristiano Ronaldo was awarded a free kick just outside the Milan area in the first two minutes.

Inter Milan were also attacking from the start.

Ronaldo was able to head an amazing corner from Giggs at the Milan goal, which was denied by the quick reflexes of Julio Cesar.

The star of the moment Ronaldo had another free kick 35 yards out which whistled past the right post.

After some quick passing and skills from a few Milan players they have a shot a goal which flies over the crossbar.

Zanetti gets a shot blocked by Evra which Van der Sar easily gathers. United then counter attack and get close but for the defending of the Italian side.

There was a spell of miss passes where the ball was switching teams every few seconds.

Evra places a cross on top of Berbatov's head after a cleared corner, that got the keeper stretching, but crept past the near post.

Ryan Giggs skips passed the right back and goes one on one with the keeper, but the shot is saved with Cesar's face and goes out for a corner.

Yet another dipping free kick from Ronaldo get saved, and moments later his header goes inches wide.

Manchester United dominated the first 30 minutes. no one can accuse them of playing a defencive game. All Milan can do is 'punt' it forward and hope for the best.

Milan waste there best chance of the night with a flashy touch which trickles into Van der Sar's hands. All ball that enters the United box immediately gets cleared up field for another attack on the Milan goal.

Yet another United attack goes begging as Berbatov heads wide again.

Jose M..... gets a talking to by the ref and the substitute goal keeper gets a yellow card for an unknown reason.

Half time.

Fifteen minutes to get a drink, more food, that well earned 'slash' and then to find that comfortable position in front of the tele.

After there dominance, United still don't have the goal that they deserve.

Second half.

Milan attack from the whistle. First, a missed timed shot goes agonisingly wide, and then they are not awarded a penalty (when it was an obvious dive).

Shot after shot by Milan goes wide with no real threat to the United keeper.

Both teams are evenly matched as the ball flies from on box to the other.

A terrific floated passpicks out Ibrahimavic who controls perfectly and looks to be on to score, but then the flag goes up for offside, to the groan of the thousands of Inter fans.

Maicon flies in on Carrick and clips his shin, which is punished by a yellow card. There was no need for the foul as United were getting pushed back into a corner.

Fouls are committed all over the field but after an hour only three yellow cards have been shown, all of them to Milan players.

Manchester United look like a different team to the one in the first half. There is not as much urgency to get the away goal, and it seems like they are backing down from the attacking game they played in the first 45 minutes.

25 minutes to play at the San Siro and still nothing to split the teams.

Ronaldo plays the ball across the face of the goal but is not met by a United boot, and is cleared for yet another corner.

Fletcher slides in to a tackle from behind and is awarded United's first yellow card of the match.

A quarter of the game left and both teams are anxious to get the first and maybe the winning goal.

Chance after chance for both teams go begging as the passes or crosses are over hit or blocked.

Giggs has a great opportunity to score, but his shot gets blocked and the chance for another shot is over.

Milan make the first substitution and change their formation from 4-4-2 to 3-4-3 for more attacking chances.

A Milan corner bounces across the face of the United goal and somehow fails to go across the line to the anger of the home supporters.

Wayne Rooney comes on with 7 minutes to go to try and score that priceless away goal.

Rooney goes on one of his wonder runs but loses it and slides in on two players. He is shown a yellow card by the ref which was very harsh.

Rooney again has the chance with a run at goal, only to be stopped by Cesar coming out of his box and clearing it.

Ronaldo has another free kick with the last kick of the game with is saved and thumbled away.

Full time.

Manchester United set a Champions League record of 20 games unbeaten.

The "special one" will have to wait for the second leg at Old Trafford to get beaten.
