Tommy Rees: Notre Dame QB Reportedly Suspended for Irish's Season Opener
Quarterback Tommy Rees has been suspended by Notre Dame for the season opener in Dublin, Ireland, according to Joe Schad of ESPN.
Schad tweeted on Tuesday:
"ND announces QB Tommy Rees suspended from opener in Dublin Ireland
— Joe Schad (@schadjoe) July 31, 2012"
Rees pleaded guilty on July 23 to two misdemeanor charges: illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor and one count of resisting law enforcement.
The charges came after he was arrested at a party off campus in May.
Rees is hoping to make a bigger impact for the Fighting Irish after an up-and-down season in his sophomore campaign. Rees completed over 65 percent of his passes for 2,871 yards and 20 touchdowns last season, but he also threw 14 interceptions.
Getting suspended for the opener certainly can't help Rees' chances of grabbing hold of the starting job, especially considering he's in a wide open quarterback battle heading into the spring.
Notre Dame is hoping to bounce back from a relatively disappointing season in 2011-2012. Despite being ranked in the Top 20 in the preseason AP Poll, the Fighting Irish ended up missing out on a BCS bowl, going 8-5 on the season. They lost in the Champs Sports Bowl to Florida State, 18-14, to end the campaign. Rees passed for 163 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in that game.
What happens to Rees now is anyone's guess. He can either rise from this and possibly regain the trust of the coaching staff and his teammates or slide into irrelevance as his competition at the quarterback spot replaces him.
One thing's for sure: He has a lot of making up to do.
