Real Madrid Boss Juande Ramos Admits La Liga Leaders Barcelona are the Best

Yoosof FarahFeb 22, 2009

Juande Ramos might've finally got something right for once, when he admitted that his Real Madrid side are only behind in La Liga title race because the current Barcelona side is possibly the best in the Catalan giants' history.

Despite their recent hiccup on Saturday, where they lost 2-1 to arch-rivals RCD Espanyol at the Nou Camp, Barcelona remain seven points clear at the top of the table.

It was a 10-point gap just before this weekend, but Los Galaticos capitalised on their Catalan counterparts mistake with a 6-1 hammering of Real Betis at the Santiago Bernabeu.

And Ramos has said that although Barca are in scintillating form this season, his Madrid side aren't that far behind.

The Madrid boss said: "Since I arrived [at Real Madrid] we have won just one less point than Barca. They have had a goal difference of plus 20, while we have plus 18," he said.

"Without doubt we are playing some brilliant football and are not so far away, but we are talking about the best Barcelona team in history."

Of course it is open to interpretation whether or not Barca have a psychological advantage in the title race, or whether it is another mind game from the Tottenham Hotspur flop.

With a large gap between the sides, many pundits are suggesting Real will focus all of their attention on the UEFA Champions League, something that might be quite sensible considering Barca's form in the league so far.

However, as always Ramos seems to have other ideas, and said: "If someone were to ask me which is easier to win then I would say the Champions League. There are less games and we depend upon ourselves."

"Making Barcelona play badly is not among my powers. But I do not agree that we have spent the last two months preparing to play in the Champions League."

On another subject, Juande Ramos' contract runs out in June, and as with all of these top Spanish sides, the manager's contract will only be renewed if he can guarantee success (e.g. win a trophy).

With the presidential elections at Real Madrid coming in the summer, even though it is high unlikely Ramos' contract will be extended, he is in limbo whether he will be rewarded with a new deal.

"On 30th June I will be free and if anyone can advise what the best beach in Sardinia is then that is where I will be waiting to hear about news from Real Madrid without any anxiety," he explained.

"Even if we win a trophy I will have no problem going if the new president has other ideas."
