Big Ten Football: Absurd Suggestion by Pat Fitzgerald to Change B1G Title Game

Randy ChambersJun 5, 2018

College football media days always provide some of the most bizarre, laughable and most ridiculous statements you will ever hear from a college coach. Big Ten media days did not fail to disappoint, as it came from Northwestern's head coach, Pat Fitzgerald.

His idea that he blurted out on the podium was to have a committee select the team that will play the winner of the Legends Division in the Big Ten Conference Championship Game. (Via Tom Dienhart of the BTN.com)

Fitzgerald proposes putting Legends champ in #B1G title game--and have committee pick second team given situation in Leaders. #B1GFootball

This idea is based on the fact that only four teams are competing for a spot in the Leaders Division with Ohio State and Penn State banned from postseason play. And with Indiana, Illinois, Purdue and Wisconsin being those four teams, the Badgers are almost guaranteed a spot to return to the Big Ten Championship Game.

But why is that Wisconsin's fault that two programs could not stay out of trouble and avoid NCAA sanctions? They shouldn't be punished because other schools couldn't be on their best behavior.

And why in the world would a committee be the one picking the program to play in the big game? We are already having a hard time deciding who should be on the committee for the college football playoffs that will begin in 2014. There is no way that a committee would be selected in time before the season starts without fans from the Big Ten crying foul.

Also, does anyone else find it funny that a coach from Northwestern is the one that is proposing this idea? Even if was to take place, I highly doubt that the Wildcats would even be considered for a trip to Lucas Oil Stadium.

The divisions are the way they are and the top two teams in the conference should be decided on the football field, not by a committee. If anything, it gives other teams a shot to compete that usually wouldn't have a shot whatsoever in this conference. Hey, anything can happen, just look at UCLA last season in the Pac-12.

With the season just a month away, this would be too sticky of a situation to try and figure out and it simply is not going to happen.
