College Football Police Blotter: Greg Reid and Most Costly off-Field Issues
Florida State DB Greg Reid’s arrest for alleged drug possession earlier this month reminds us that college-aged athletes often seem destined for a collision with legal trouble.
Reid’s detainment could prove costly to the ‘Noles, as he racked up 416 yards and one score on punt returns, 147 yards in kick returns, two picks, 32 tackles, one tackle for a loss and five broken-up passes last year as a junior.
The following slideshow builds on Reid’s troubles and catalogs 42 of the most costly off-field issues in college football thus far in 2012.
This well-linked and lightly-inked piece chock full of drug arrests, DUIs and assault charge serves notice that the next scandal is always just right around the corner.
As a note, the recent events at Penn State have been left off this list because the focus here is on individual student-athlete incidents as opposed to institutional issues.
Telvion Clark, Virginia Tech
1 of 42Hokie LB Telvion Clark was kicked off the team after a St. Patrick arrest for public swearing and intoxication.
Clark is a talented young athlete who recorded five tackles and a half-tackle for a loss in three games as a sophomore in 2011.
TCU
2 of 42In one of the more extensive college football arrest incidents in recent memory, four TCU football players were arrested in a drug bust this past February.
The latest chapter in an incident that rippled through the program came just this week when D.J. Yendrey, Tanner Brock and Tyler Horn all plead guilty to marijuana delivery and received three years of probation.
The full effect of the sweeping episode is still unknown, though it’s fairly logical to think that it will at least have some impact on the Horned Frogs program moving forward.
Sanders Commings, Georgia
3 of 42Even though incoming senior CB Sanders Commings was arrested on domestic violence and simple battery charges in January, he’s still projected to be a starter this September.
Commings’ return to the field is crucial for the Bulldogs as he was a huge contributor to a defensive unit that finished 2011 ranked No. 12 nationally against the pass.
Commings’ stat sheet last season included one pick, one fumble return, 55 tackles (46 solo), four tackles for a loss, one sack and 11 broken-up passes.
Braden Smith, Georgia
4 of 42Another contributor to Georgia’s defense in 2011, CB Braden Smith was arrested for marijuana possession this past spring break.
Though it was reported that Smith would be suspended for at least one game in 2012, Smith’s name is still high on many mock-up Georgia depth charts.
Beyond Smith’s value as a defender, he racked up 402 yards as a return specialist, receiver and back in 2011.
J.J. Worton, UCF
5 of 42Incoming sophomore WR J.J. Worton was arrested in March on charges of felony resisting arrest with violence and felony battery on a peace officer.
The charges were serious enough for Worton to be suspended from spring football but his status moving forward is unknown.
Worton would be a significant loss for a Knights team that is on the verge of a big 2012 as he was the No. 1 receiver last year as a freshman.
Pierce Richardson, Iowa State
6 of 42The only guy on our list to get tased during his arrest, Iowa State’s Pierce Richardson was zapped after police attempted to wake him up from a passed-out state in a hallway.
Richardson’s aggressive reaction during the March incident landed him in jail overnight and as of the report cited he has been indefinitely suspended from the team.
Richardson was a freshman TE for the Cyclones in 2011 and has yet to produce any in-game stats.
Jourdon Grandon, Arizona
7 of 42The first of four Arizona players who were arrested after a fight this past March, CB Jourdon Grandon was hauled in for first degree criminal trespassing and assault.
Though it’s unknown as to whether or not the incident will draw a suspension for any of the players involved, the loss of Grandon would be significant as he is a promising youngster who recorded 36 tackles and one pick as a freshman in 2011.
Fabbians Ebbele, Arizona
8 of 42The second of the Wild Wildcat Four, OT Fabbians Ebbele shared the charges of criminal trespassing and assault in the post-party melee.
Ebbele, an incoming sophomore, would be a costly loss for Arizona as he is projected to be a starter in 2012.
Eric Bender, Arizona
9 of 42Incoming sophomore OL Eric Bender shared equal charges with Grandon and Ebbele as a result of March’s unfortunate incident.
Bender could arguably be considered the least costly of the three if suspensions were levied due to the arrests.
Jared Tevis, Arizona
10 of 42The final of the four Wildcat players involved in the March incident, safety Jared Tevis came away with the single charge of trespassing.
Tevis accounted for 12 tackles as a sophomore in 2011 and is projected to start as a free safety in 2012.
Ashton Glaser, Missouri
11 of 42In perhaps the most entertaining tale from the incidents our list, Missouri’s second-string QB Ashton Glaser got arrested this past March after a girl punched him in the face.
That’s right; Glaser, who had knocked on a female’s apartment door early one morning in March, was popped in the head but got booked for unpaid speeding tickets when the cops showed up.
Glaser saw limited action in 2011 and is expected to be back in action in 2012.
Jace Amaro, Texas Tech
12 of 42Texas Tech TE Jace Amaro was arrested this past March on felony charges related to unauthorized use of a credit card at a Lubbock area bar.
Amaro ran for 57 yards and two scores as a freshman in 2011 and it remains unknown as to whether or not the incident will have any effect on his efforts in 2012.
Kenny Williams, Texas Tech
13 of 42Kenny Williams, an incoming sophomore WR at Tech, was arrested alongside teammate Jace Amaro in March for allegedly improperly using a credit card.
Williams hauled in 43 catches for 135 yards and two scores in 2011 and rushed for an additional 52 yards.
As is the case with Amaro, it is unknown if Williams will be disciplined by the team for the incident.
Jaryd Rudolph, Boston College
14 of 42In one of the more disturbing arrest incidents in college football this year, Boston College’s DT Jaryd Rudolph was arrested and then suspended for allegedly taping a teammate having sex.
Rudolph registered a total of six tackles in seven games for the Eagles as a sophomore in 2011.
Jordan Duval, USF
15 of 42USF WR Jordan Duval was arrested earlier this month in connection with the theft of an iPhone on the South Florida campus.
Duval is an incoming sophomore who has participated in two games, but has yet to earn any statistical evidence of his contributions.
Tommy Rees, Notre Dame
16 of 42Irish QB Tommy Rees, along with teammate Carlo Calabrese were arrested in June due to events that occurred after a party.
Rees was charged with battery, resisting law enforcement and illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor.
Rees is battling for the starting place under center at Notre Dame and though his arrest might not cost his team, it may cost him a few precious points in the battle for pecking order.
Carlo Calabrese, Notre Dame
17 of 42Tommy Rees’ co-arrestee last month, Irish LB Carlo Calabrese, was hauled in for a misdemeanor charge of intimidation of an officer.
Calabrese is an incoming senior at Notre Dame and amassed 37 total tackles, one tackle for a loss and one INT during his junior campaign in 2011.
Zeke Pike, Auburn
18 of 42One of Auburn’s back-up QBs, Zeke Pike was arrested in June on public intoxication charges.
Though getting put behind bars is never a good thing, Pike’s altercation seems much less serious than others on this list.
It is unknown whether or not Pike will lose out on any on-field participation because of the arrest, but he has gone home for the summer because of the incident.
Alex Dunnachie, Hawaii
19 of 42Dunnachie, an incoming junior punter for Hawaii, was arrested for allegedly driving while under the influence earlier this month.
If further disciplined by the university, Dunnachie could be a costly loss to Hawaii as no team anticipates losing their four-year starting punter just weeks before the season kicks off.
Cayman Shutter, Hawaii
20 of 42Another Warrior booked for a DUI, incoming junior QB Cayman Shutter was arrested in March and has been suspended for the first four games of the 2012 campaign.
The loss of Shutter is significant as he was expected to compete for the starting QB job, or at least serve as the back-up, in 2012.
Reid Tachibana, Hawaii
21 of 42Incoming senior LB Reid Tachibana, who was not projected as a starter for the 2012 season, was also slapped with a DUI charge this summer.
Though a potential suspension of Tachibana won’t have the impact of Dunnachie or Shutter, it does raise questions about the rash of drunken-driving charges at Hawaii in 2012.
Darrin Moore, Texas Tech
22 of 42Texas Tech WR Darrin Moore was booked back in April for a DWI and has just recently been suspended from the team.
With 571 yards and eight scores in 2011, Moore was Tech’s No. 3 receiver and his permanent loss could wreak havoc on a unit that was definitely the Red Raiders' statistical high water mark last season.
Mike Orakpo, Colorado State
23 of 42Included in this tale of a costly loss to one school is the happy story of the gain for another.
Colorado State LB Mike Orakpo was arrested after a fight this spring that led to a drug investigation and then ultimately to his dismissal from both the football program and the university.
Orakpo registered 87 tackles as a sophomore in 2011 and also contributed one pick and three tackles for a loss to a unit that floundered to a No. 91 ranking in scoring defense last season.
In the aftermath, Orakpo is heading to Baylor where he will sit out the 2012 season and hit the field as a Bear in 2013.
Terry Williams, East Carolina
24 of 42East Carolina finished the 2011 season ranked No. 97 nationally in scoring defense, meaning that they really can’t afford to lose any experienced defenders.
Unfortunately, that’s precisely what has happened due to indefinite suspension doled out to NT Terry Williams this month after his drug arrest in July.
As a freshman in 2011 Williams racked up 31 total tackles, three tackles for a loss and tacked on two forced fumbles for good measure.
A.C. Leonard, Florida
25 of 42Incoming sophomore TE A.C. Leonard was arrested this past February on domestic violence charges.
According to naplesnews.com, Leonard and Florida have made a “mutual” decision to part ways, unfortunately costing the Gators a talented young player who caught eight balls for 99 yards late last season.
Isaiah Crowell, Georgia
26 of 42Another blockbuster 2012 arrest, Georgia’s promising young RB Isaiah Crowell was thrown off the team permanently after being arrested for a felony weapons charge in June.
Crowell was Georgia’s leading rusher in 2011 as a freshman and was expected to be a huge impact player in the Bulldogs' potential title run in 2012.
Rumor has it that Crowell is transferring to FCS Alabama State for the upcoming season.
Johnny Manziel, Texas A&M
27 of 42The Aggies' search for a new QB in their SEC debut might be somewhat hampered by redshirt freshman QB Johnny Manziel’s arrest in June.
Manziel was hauled in for disorderly conduct and presenting a fake ID to arresting officers, charges that landed him in jail overnight.
Though it’s unclear as to whether his arrest will hamper his opportunity to compete in 2012, some experts have projected Manziel to be the starter this season which could make the incident significant.
Maudrecus Humphrey, Arkansas
28 of 42The first of six Razorbacks with arrests in 2012, WR Maudrecus Humphrey was apprehended for felony residential burglary this past May along with two teammates highlighted on the next two slides.
The good news for Hog fans regarding Humphrey is that he is not been a major contributor over his two active seasons in Fayetteville and touts only one catch for nine yards thus far in his collegiate career.
Humphrey, along with the other two athletes was suspended by Arkansas head coach John L. Smith, who apparently is not planning on reinstating any of the trio.
Marquel Wade, Arkansas
29 of 42WR Marquel Wade was also arrested in May for felony residential burglary and has also been indefinitely suspended from the Arkansas team by coach John L. Smith.
Wade, an incoming sophomore, did participate early in the Razorbacks' 2011 campaign and contributed eight catches for 62 yards and one rush for 37 yards as a freshman.
What makes Wade’s arrest and suspension costly for Arkansas is the promise he showed as a return specialist last season, a performance that resulted in one score and 457 combined punt- and kick-return yards.
Andrew Peterson, Arkansas
30 of 42The third of the trio of Hogs arrested together for felony residential burglary in May and subsequently removed from the team, the young TE Andrew Peterson has yet to see any playing time as a Razorback.
Tyler Gilbert, Arkansas
31 of 42Punching the arrest clock in April of this year, Arkansas LB Tyler Gilbert was booked on felony burglary and theft of property.
Gilbert was a freshman last season and contributed three tackles in five games to the Hogs defensive bottom line, meaning that his subsequent suspension (which also looks to have stuck) isn’t likely to have huge effect in 2012.
Jason Peacock, Arkansas
32 of 42No. 5 of Arkansas’ six total 2012 arrests, OT Jason Peacock was booked for felony theft this spring and actually spent 10 days in jail.
Peacock is an incoming senior who was expected to be the starting right tackle for the Razorbacks this season; the most recent reports indicate that Peacock is still with the team.
Kane Whitehurst, Arkansas
33 of 42WR Kane Whitehurst was booked on charges of marijuana possession this past April and is yet another Arkansas player that is currently listed as “no longer with the program.”
Whitehurst, who was a freshman in 2011, has yet to log any game participation stats as a Razorback.
Shayne Skov, Stanford
34 of 42Incoming senior LB Shayne Skov was arrested back in February for allegedly driving under the influence on the campus at Stanford.
Though Skov was initially dismissed from the team, he was reinstated in late June and will now only miss the Cardinals' 2012 opener vs. San Jose State.
Skov’s participation next season could prove significant as he was one of Stanford’s major defensive forces in 2010, a feat he couldn’t repeat last season due to an ACL tear early in the season.
Skov registered 83 tackles (50 solo), 10 tackles for a loss, seven sacks, five broken-up passes and two forced fumbles as a sophomore two seasons ago and could be a major contributor to what is now a very young Stanford team.
Sean Collins, Purdue
35 of 42Purdue CB Sean Collins was arrested in West Lafayette, Ind. in mid-July for the alleged charges of resisting arrest, battery and public intoxication.
Boilermakers head man Danny Hope has, at least for now, dismissed Collins from the team, a decision he may re-visit if the pending charges change.
The loss of Collins is not as devastating to Purdue as others on our Blotter Roll Call, as he is yet to see any in-game playing time in his three-year collegiate career.
Storm Klein, Ohio State
36 of 42Ohio State’s LB Storm Klein’s run-in with the law resulted in the former starter being completely dismissed from the Buckeye team.
Klein was arrested earlier in July for charges of domestic violence that allegedly resulted when he and a female were involved in a physical altercation at a Columbus, Ohio apartment complex.
As a junior in 2011, Klein was credited with one pick, 45 total tackles, two tackles for a loss, one sack and one forced fumble.
Sammy Watkins, Clemson
37 of 42In perhaps one of the costliest off-season arrests, Clemson’s fab freshman from 2011, WR Sammy Watkins, was arrested this spring for drug possession.
Though Watkins’ punishment has not yet been delivered by Dabo Swinney, the Tigers’ head coach explained that, “He’s going to sit, it’s just a matter of how much and when and what kind of stuff.”
Watkins was extremely productive as a freshman, amassing 2,294 yards of total offense as a receiver, rusher and kick-returner.
Jamal Mosley, Ole Miss
38 of 42This past Saturday Ole Miss TE Jamal Mosley was arrested for the third time in his collegiate career, this time for public intoxication and disturbing the peace.
Mosley’s other apprehensions came as a Rebel in 2011 and before that during a short stint at Oklahoma State.
The latest incident occurred outside of a bar in Oxford, Miss. and resulted in his indefinite suspension from the Ole miss team.
As a junior in 2011, Mosley had 12 catches for 166 yards and a single TD.
Anthony Laurenzi, Washington State
39 of 42Cougar DT Anthony Laurenzi was arrested this past Sunday on alleged theft charges related to a Pullman, Wash. location of Wal-Mart.
Laurenzi amassed 26 tackles (16 solo), 6.5 tackles for a loss and blocked a kick last season as a junior and, as in the case with his teammate Travis Long, it is unsure as to what if any penalties Washington State will enforce as a result of the detainment.
Travis Long, Washington State
40 of 42In an incident that seems almost too bizarre to be real, Cougar LB Travis Long was arrested last Friday night, July 20, for potentially being a minor illegally in possession of alcohol.
So, where’s the irony in an under-aged college kid getting caught with beer?
Well, Long turned 21 years old this past Monday, July 24, or just four days after his arrest.
It’s unsure what implications Long’s arrest has for his football aspirations in 2012, but any loss of play could prove costly for the Cougars.
As a junior last season Long racked up 43 tackles (30 solo), 12 tackles for a loss and four sacks and also broke up three passes, forced a fumble and blocked a kick.
Frank Clark, Michigan
41 of 42As recently as Monday Michigan’s Brady Hoke had to add another “indefinite suspension” to his offseason list of things to do; this one came via DE Frank Clark’s home invasion charges.
Clark, an incoming sophomore who saw action limited action in 2011 but still managed to register one pick, ten tackles and a partial tackle for a loss, was arrested for allegedly swiping a laptop from a campus dorm in June.
Fitzgerald Toussaint, Michigan
42 of 42The other late July police report for a Michigan man came this past weekend when incoming junior RB Fitzgerald Toussaint was arrested on DUI charges.
Toussaint, who racked up 1,041 yards and nine scores on 187 carriers, was Michigan’s No. 2 back in 2011 and has been “indefinitely suspended” from the team by Brady Hoke.
