What to Expect at Big 12 Media Days 2012

Randy ChambersJun 7, 2018

The Big 12 media days are just a day away from taking place, as it will be a two-day event that kicks off on July 23rd.

This conference is quickly on the rise, and seemed to get even stronger with the additions of TCU and West Virginia. Media day is the first real opportunity everybody has to ask questions about the much anticipated upcoming college football season, and in this conference, there are many questions surrounding many of these teams that need answers.

With Big 12 media day finally underway, here are a few things you should expect.

Newcomers to Be Doubted

1 of 5

Much like the SEC, the Big 12 has added a few teams such as TCU and West Virginia, and if it's anything that we have already learned, it is that the newbies get picked on before they prove themselves.

While the hazing should not be as bad as it was in the SEC, making a transition from the MWC and Big East to the Big 12 is a big step up in competition.

Although both the Horned Frogs and Mountaineers have big boy talent, you can expect many media members to still favor the veteran clubs until the newcomers prove themselves early on this season.

Playoffs?

2 of 5

The SEC media days has already shown us that every single coach will get asked numerous questions about his thoughts on the new college football playoff format. Even though the playoffs won't begin until the 2014 season, and teams such as Kansas, Iowa State and Baylor may never be playoff caliber teams, the media still wants to know their thoughts.

Nevertheless, you will get a wide variety of different answers on the new format that will change how a national champion is decided.

Kansas to Receive More Attention Than Normal

3 of 5

Kansas has only reached four bowl games since 1995 and has won a combined 10 games the last three seasons. It goes without saying that this program needs a lot of help on the football side of things, and the Jayhawks will likely finish dead last once again in the conference.

But Kansas does have a few things going for them, and one of those things is new head coach Charlie Weis. He quit being the offensive coordinator for the Florida Gators after one season and decided to head to Lawrence to try and turn the program around.

Usually you can tell how relevant a program is by the amount of questions a team’s coaches receives. But Weis is a popular guy who could actually be the first Kansas coach ever to fill up the entire 15 minutes of interview time.

Who Is the Best of the Best at QB?

4 of 5

Out of the 10 teams in the Big 12, seven teams are bringing their quarterbacks along for the ride (ESPN). Three of those teams have arguably the best quarterback in the conference. You could make a case for Oklahoma's Landry Jones, West Virginia's Geno Smith and Kansas State's Collin Klein.

Which quarterback would you rather have leading your team?

You can expect the media to ask plenty of questions about the quarterback position and likely try to create a friendly competition along the way, especially with the season about a month away from kicking off.

Boring Pressers

5 of 5

The Big 12 is not like the SEC, where many coaches can't wait to egg on the next man in his press conferences. No, this conference includes a lot of older coaches, who coach the old school way and simply get along with their peers.

Bob Stoops, Mack Brown, Bill Snyder and Mike Gundy all seem like guys who have respect for each other and would not go out of their way to throw anyone under the bus.

We saw a lot of that last week with Steve Spurrier and company; don't expect much of that during the Big 12 media days.
