SEC Media Days 2012: Coaches and Players We're Most Looking Forward to on Day 3
The Media Circus that is SEC Media Days is coming to a close.
The first two days have brought us some memorable moments. Mike Gillislee said he plans on running for 1,500 yards and 24 touchdowns this season, numbers that have only been posted at Florida by players named Ciatrick Fason, Tim Tebow and Emmitt Smith.
Missouri wide receiver T.J. Moe stole day one when he said that he has been told in the SEC, "The girls are prettier, the air is cleaner and the toilet paper is thicker" (via San Antonio Express-News).
Arkansas' interim head coach, John L. Smith, was asked about the meaning of his term "Get your piss hot."
As you can see we have had an eventful week, and with heavy hitters in Alabama and Georgia along with a coach on the hot seat in Derek Dooley set for Thursday, we can expect some more notable quotes coming our way.
Here is a list of the top 10 players and coaches we are looking forward to hearing from tomorrow.
10. Tavarres King, WR, Georgia
1 of 10King describes himself as a "Twitterholic" (h/t Andy Johnston on FOX Sports). King has over 12,000 tweets so he obviously doesn't have a problem speaking his mind.
King is also coming off of a record-setting performance in a triple-overtime loss to Michigan State. King caught six passes for a Georgia record of 205 yards and a touchdown.
9. Michael Williams, TE, Alabama
2 of 10At 6'6',' 270 pounds, Williams passes the eye test.
Williams has been a reliable weapon as a true dual threat tight end for the Tide. Williams is a great blocker for the Tide's powerful running attack and has enough speed to create mismatches with linebackers.
As a senior, Williams is a two-time National Champion and should be a good interview tomorrow.
8. Barrett Jones, OL, Alabama
3 of 10Barrett Jones is the jack-of-all-trades master of ... well, all of them.
Jones played almost every offensive line position for the Tide last season and was a unanimous All-American selection last season at tackle. Jones will be moving to center for the upcoming season but we wouldn't be surprised to see him play multiple positions again.
After going through the media circus at the National Championship last season and making the award circuits, Barrett should be comfortable in front of the media tomorrow—and when players get comfortable, we get great quotes.
7. Jarvis Jones, OLB/DE, Georgia
4 of 10Jarvis Jones gave LSU some bulletin board material before last year's SEC championship game, and we're hoping he gives us more tomorrow.
Before the SEC championship game Jones was quoted saying, "We just have to play the way we've been playing. If we don't give away points, there's no way they [LSU] can beat us" (via Statesman.com).
Well it didn't turn out exactly like that, but Jones is still one of the most feared pass rushers in a conference filled with dominant pass rushers. Listed as a linebacker, Jones can play both OLB and DE and is looking to impress scouts with a solid junior campaign.
6. Tyler Bray, QB, Tennessee
5 of 10Going into his junior season, Tyler Bray has already started 16 games for the Vols and provided us with great moments like this—unfortunately, Tennessee would lose that game to North Carolina.
Bray has matured since his freshman season, where that video came from, and is poised to lead his team back to a bowl game in 2012. Bray will field questions about his coach being on the hot seat and what it means to have both his receivers back and healthy to start the season.
Hopefully a little bit of the freshman Bray comes out tomorrow and gives us something memorable.
5. Hugh Freeze, Head Coach, Ole Miss
6 of 10Talk about casting a wide net. New Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze has 25-30 roster sports available, so the coach and his staff offered an astounding 241 high school athletes scholarships to their university.
This will be Freeze's first SEC Media Days, and any coach that has the nerve to offer almost 250 kids scholarships is pretty entertaining already. Freeze is our dark house candidate to steal the show at the 2012 SEC Media Days.
4. Derek Dooley, Head Coach, Tennessee
7 of 10No coach in the SEC is on a hotter seat than Derek Dooley.
After taking over for Lane Kiffin in 2010, the Vols have only managed an 11-14 record and didn't qualify for a bowl game last season.
Dooley needs to win and win now if he wants to keep his job at Tennessee. He will be bombarded with questions about his job security and his plans on turning Tennessee around.
3. Nick Saban, Head Coach, Alabama
8 of 10Coming off of a National Championship season and a top-rated recruiting class would create buzz around any coach. Throw in that SEC Media Days are in the Tide's back yard and the fact that Saban already has a statue in Tuscaloosa—the hysteria around his appearance this year should be historic.
James Franklin joked that last year, walking in with Saban, there were people throwing babies at him trying to have their child autographed...
At least we think he was joking.
Saban has risen to untouchable status in the state of Alabama and has a history of dropping some buzz-worthy lines at events like this. It was only a couple of years ago that Saban compared agents to pimps.
Saban has a short fuse when it comes to the media and doesn't like to be asked certain questions or hear repeat questions. Hopefully tomorrow something will set coach Saban off and make this Media Day one to remember.
2. Mark Richt, Head Coach, Georgia
9 of 10Richt started the 2011 season on the hot seat.
Georgia lost its first two games and that seat got hotter.
After 10 wins and a berth in the SEC Championship game, Richt appeared to be back on solid ground.
Then Georgia was blown out by LSU and lost their bowl game to Michigan State.
It seems like Richt will be on the hot seat forever, and the recent arrest and dismissal of incumbent starting running back Isaiah Crowell will give him plenty of questions that need answering.
Richt has a team that is projected to be serious contenders to get back to Atlanta in 2012. Distractions like the Crowell dismissal will only raise more questions about his job security.
1.Predicted Order of Finish
10 of 10Tomorrow the media poll on how the SEC will play out this season will be released.
While Will Muschamp pointed out today that the media has only selected the correct winner twice since 1996, what fun would it be to not try and predict how the season will play out?
The SEC West is widely thought to be a three-team race between LSU, Alabama and Arkansas. Alabama lost a ton of players on defense but have the pieces in place to pick up right where they left off in 2011. LSU returns 11 starters from a team that lost only one game last season and are hoping that Zach Mettenberger can lead the Tigers to another SEC title. Arkansas has a high-powered offense and two Heisman hopefuls in Tyler Wilson and Knile Davis.
The East is thought to be a two-horse race between Georgia and South Carolina, with Florida and Missouri falling in behind.
Georgia will miss Isaiah Crowell, but Aaron Murray is poised to lead the Dawg offense and Georgia has one of the better defenses in the SEC. South Carolina will ride the legs of Marcus Lattimore. Lattimore has the talent to approach a 2,000-yard rushing season and if he plays to his potential, the Gamecocks could win their first division title.
When the media rankings come out tomorrow I expect that LSU, Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia and South Carolina will make up the top five in that order.
Some controversy about how the three big teams in the West stack up against each other is sure to come up, and watch out for Vanderbilt hopping over a traditional SEC power in Tennessee. The Vols have had back-to-back down years, and James Franklin has the 'Dores winning more games and recruiting better than they have ever done in school history.
