Why Henry Sims and Demetri McCamey Make the Chicago Bulls Better

Ernest ShepardJun 1, 2018

The Chicago Bulls will not make one real significant move this offseason. This is something I have come to terms with.

No need to lament over foolishness, because I still will watch them every chance that I get. I will start by watching Chicago's summer league team, which features a couple of interesting players.

One player in particular is Henry Sims.

The undrafted rookie out of Georgetown should also be known as the reason why the Bulls should not match the Rockets' reported offer to Omer Asik.

The inclusion of Sims on Chicago's summer league roster was a pleasant surprise. He can bring defense, energy, low-post scoring and rebounding to the table. At age 22 Sims also represents a young talent looking to prove that he belongs on a NBA roster.

I hope that the Bulls give up this fallacy of contending next season and develop younger, low-cost players.

Imagine how good the Bulls could be if Sims can turn into the second coming of Paul Millsap. The Bulls should put a premium on seeing what Sims can offer. I think that he can blossom into a force if given the chance.

The other interesting name on Chicago's summer league roster is former that of Illinois standout Demetri McCamey.

At 6’3” McCamey has good size for a point guard. He is 23 and was a good shooter in college. McCamey is versatile enough to play a little shooting guard. Also, he has familiarity with Rose.

If one or both of these players can pan out, contention might not be that far off. Plus, the Bulls would immediately be younger.

If the idea is to build for the future, then why not build while Rose is on the mend?

Building for the future starts with giving Sims and McCamey every opportunity to make the team. The Bulls can afford to carry both of them and still not go deep into the luxury tax, as the roster currently stands at 10 players.

There is no need to go purposely after the sixth or seventh seed in the playoffs with veterans in their 30s.

The Bulls can make the playoffs while doing the same thing with guys in their early 20s.
