Clemson Football: Where Tajh Boyd Ranks on Top QB List in 2012 ACC Season

Connor MuldowneyJun 7, 2018

The ACC is filled with quality quarterbacks. In 2011, two of the top quarterbacks in the ACC led their teams to a BCS bowl.

Although they both lost, they proved that the ACC has no shortage of talent at the position. There are about five or six quarterbacks in the conference that have NFL talent.

Here is my list of top ACC quarterbacks in 2012 and where Tajh Boyd fits in with the best in the conference.

5. Bryn Renner

1 of 5

Renner led North Carolina to a 7-6 record last season and an Independence Bowl loss to Missouri. The sophomore, first-year starter in 2011 showed that he can play at a high level.

Renner was one of the most accurate quarterbacks in the conference as well, posting a 68.3 percent completion rate. He also passed for over 3,000 yards and 26 touchdowns.

Although he averaged an interception per game, racking up 13, he has the accuracy to change a game. Look for him to improve on his interception number this season and possibly approach 3,500 yards for an improved North Carolina team.

4. Mike Glennon

2 of 5

Glennon was chosen by NC State coach Tom O'Brien last season to run his football team. There was a quarterback battle heading into last season between Glennon and the skillful Russell Wilson, but Glennon prevailed, causing a transfer for Wilson to Wisconsin.

The senior quarterback became a starter for the first time last season and didn't fail to impress.

Glennon was one of two quarterbacks in the ACC to pass for over 30 touchdowns last season while also throwing for over 3,000 yards. Glennon was also accurate, completing 62.5 percent of his passes and leading his team to a Belk Bowl victory over Louisville, capping off an 8-5 season.

Glennon will be in the discussion for top-three quarterbacks in the ACC for the 2012 season.

3. Logan Thomas

3 of 5

Yet another first-year starting quarterback in 2011, Logan Thomas led his Hokies all the way to the Sugar Bowl. He was one of just two ACC quarterbacks to lead his team to a BCS bowl.

Although they lost the Sugar Bowl to Michigan, Virginia Tech had a very successful season in 2011, finishing 11-3. Thomas was an impressive athlete for the Hokies, using his legs to rush for 11 touchdowns and almost 500 yards.

His arm was equally as impressive, throwing for 3,013 yards with 19 touchdowns. Although his accuracy was not the best, he could very well be one of the top two quarterbacks that the conference has to offer.

Right now, however, unless he improves his accuracy, he comes in at the third-best in the ACC.

2. EJ Manuel

4 of 5

EJ Manuel is easily one of the most skillful quarterbacks in the ACC, if not the country. The junior quarterback led his Seminoles to a 9-4 record in 2011 and a Champs Sports Bowl victory over Notre Dame.

Although injuries plagued Manuel last season, preventing him from playing to his full potential, he can compete with the best. He threw for 2,666 yards and 18 touchdowns last year with just eight interceptions.

Manuel also had an impressive 65.3 percent completion percentage, making him one of the more accurate passers in the ACC.

With a full offseason to heal from his nagging shoulder injury, Manuel should improve on all of his numbers from last season and lead Florida State to a great record.

1. Tajh Boyd

5 of 5

No. 1 on my list of ACC's top quarterbacks is none other than Tajh Boyd. The Clemson star quarterback was the talk of the ACC last season and became everyone's favorite for top quarterback in the conference.

Boyd led one of the conferences best offenses last season to an impressive 10-win season and a BCS bowl berth. Granted, they lost the Orange Bowl against West Virginia, but Boyd boasted incredible numbers all season long.

Boyd threw nine interceptions in his last six games, which is less than impressive, but has an entire offseason to take in the new offense. The junior threw for 3,828 yards and 33 touchdowns—both were tops in the conference.

He has room for improvement with his accuracy, but with most of the offense from last year still in tact, Boyd has the ability to improve on his incredible 2011 numbers. He is easily the best ACC quarterback.
