5 Annoyingly Absurd Things Analysts Say During the NBA Draft

Dan FavaleJun 7, 2018

The NBA draft is incredibly entertaining, but it's not always educational.

As we watch players ascend to the podium after hearing their names called, we are sometimes subject to listening to words that hold absolutely no wisdom.

That's right, you guessed it, we're talking about draft day analysts.

Because while they're supposed to be experts of their craft, sometimes they say the darndest, most wildly absurd things.

Trade Predictions

Sometimes a team makes a surprise selection, and when they do, analysts have a tendency to create unnecessary trade chatter.

Just because a team makes an unconventional pick or goes the unprojected route doesn't mean they're going to explore a trade.

While it's obviously possible, we have enough rumor-happy personalities throwing scenarios against the wall hoping they'll stick. We don't need any more, especially before we know what a player is actually worth.

Just saying.

He's the Best Player Since...

You know what really grinds my gears? When NBA analysts definitively peg a player's career before they play a minute at the professional level.

How many times have you heard an announcer utter "he is the best [insert position] to enter the draft since [insert name proven superstar's name]" just after the player in question was selected?

Too often. We cannot possibly know how well they'll fare or whom to truly compare them against until we them play at the next level.

Many believed that Greg Oden was the best big man to come out of the draft since Tim Duncan.

How did that work out, exactly?

He's Going To...

Even worse than being too vague is when analysts become too specific.

When they start talking stat lines or career achievements mere moments after an incoming rookie finds out where he's playing, that's nuts—and hardly ever accurate.

I'm still looking for a soundbite from an announcer who said that LeBron James wouldn't win an NBA ring until his ninth NBA season.

He'll Barely See the Floor

When it comes to predicting how much of an impact a player will make—particularly in the second round—announcers should resist the urge to declare an incoming rookie will be buried on the bench.

While some picks are clearly considered more NBA-ready than others, who's to say that won't change during training camp, or as the result of some freak injury?

Isaiah Thomas wasn't expected to see any minutes with the Kings, yet he's now one of the hottest commodities Sacramento has to offer.

Somewhat ironically, when an analyst sets a player up for failure, they risk setting themselves up for an even bigger occupational failure.

Shamelessly Going Against the Grain

It's OK to have an unpopular opinion, but there's a point where it gets ridiculous.

There's always at least one guy who disagrees with a particular selection—specifically the first pick—for no particular reason.

It doesn't boil down to stats or potential impact. We'll just receive a "not the route I would have gone" conjecture.

As awesome as it is that they have their own opinion, would they care to explain why or offer even a shred of justification?

Call me a cynic, but empty backhanded comments are annoyingly worthless.
