Twitter Explodes as BCS Presidents Announce College Football Playoff
The BCS presidents reportedly approved a four-team playoff for college football's 2014-15 season on Tuesday, adding that six bowls would rotate for the rights to host each year.
Nicole Auerbach of USA Today reported:
"Official release: College football will have afour-team, seeded playoff starting in 2014-15 season.
— Nicole Auerbach (@nicoleauerbach) June 26, 2012"
Joe Schad of ESPN added:
"BCS will have six BCS bowls that will rotate
— Joe Schad (@schadjoe) June 26, 2012"
The Rose Bowl, Orange Bowl, Sugar Bowl and Fiesta Bowl are expected to be among the hosts.
According to Auerbach, a selection committee will choose the four playoff teams based on four criteria:
"Selection committee will rank 4 playoff teams based on: W-L record, strength of schedule, head-to-head & if team is conference champion.

Of course, with most of the nation clamoring for a playoff system for years, it was only natural that Twitter would ignite upon the news.
Here's a look at some Twitter reactions on Tuesday.
Peyton's Head, ever the jokester, tweeted:
"BCS approves 4 team playoff beginning 2014-15. Boise St. has already filed their first appeal of being left out of that 4 team field.
— Peyton's Head (@PeytonsHead) June 26, 2012"
Andy Staples of SI.com delivered the first question of the press conference with a bang, via Bleacher Report:
"Perfect first question from @Andy_Staples "What took you guys so long?"
— Bleacher Report (@BleacherReport) June 26, 2012"
"Happy major CFB will finally have a playoff. Won't please everyone but nothing's perfect. Still will have best reg. Season in sports.
— Bruce Feldman (@BFeldmanCBS) June 26, 2012"
Darren Rovell of CNBC was already looking ahead:
"The presidents have approved the 4-team playoff. Next up? The 8-team playoff.
— darren rovell (@darrenrovell) June 26, 2012"
Josh Martin of Bleacher Report, well, still wasn't amused:
"Hooray! A #collegefootball playoff that still outsources the sport's most valuable commodity to old white guys in suits!
— Josh Martin (@Josh_E_Martin) June 26, 2012"
Erin Andrews of ESPN was mighty excited:
"Finally..it is HERE! RT @CFBLIVE: RT @ESPNCFB: "4-team college football playoff has been approved. 12 year deal."
— Erin Andrews (@ErinAndrews) June 26, 2012"
Not Charles Barkley had to add his two cents:
"BCS officials said they picked a 4 team playoff over 8 cause 8 would be too hard on students. Its not like they could pay them or anything.
— Not Charles Barkley (@NotChuckBarkley) June 26, 2012"
Stewart Mandel of SI.com cautioned against an eight-team playoff:
"To all those already clamoring for 8 teams: The No. 8 team last year was 10-2 K-State. Lost a game 58-17.
— Stewart Mandel (@slmandel) June 26, 2012"
Given the wide range of criteria that will reportedly be used to identify the four playoff teams, the setup may not be as important as the committee in the long run, as Gary Davenport of Bleacher Report noted:
"@Schottey In two years a lot of the same people will be bemoaning how unfair the new setup is. What the new setup actually is is irrelevant.
— Gary Davenport (@IDPManor) June 26, 2012"
Even John Daly chipped in:
"RIP BCS >>>You will be missed by no one!Keeping College Football one of the greatest sports on earth!#BCS #NCAA#WPS
