Cristiano Ronaldo: CR7's Spectacular Play Won't Be Enough to Beat Spain
Cristiano Ronaldo's dazzling play has inspired Portugal's run to Euro 2012's semifinals, but their run will end there. Spain stands in their way.
Beating Spain will require a team effort. Ronaldo is completely capable of taking the game over. Spain is talented, but even the best defenders struggle to keep up with Ronaldo in the open field.
But Portugal's defense is over-matched. CR7's offense will not cover up their flaws against a dangerous Spanish attack. This game will be high-scoring, but Ronaldo cannot be relied upon to fell the Spanish side by himself.

Portugal's other 10 players on the pitch don't have to shoulder a major load, but they must do the little things. They're priorities are ball control, solid defense and smart play on both ends of the field.
Raul Meireles and Joao Moutinho must play with their heads up. Nani must provide some scoring of his own, and the Portugal defense must neutralize Spain's dangerous midfield.
Ronaldo will be going head-to-head with his Real Madrid teammate Alvaro Arbeloa. Arbeloa is a consistent defender, but Ronaldo definitely holds the advantage in terms of skill. Gerard Pique will also be on the right side for Spain, but he isn't up to Ronaldo's standing, either.
He holds an advantage, but his supporting cast must notice that. When he crosses the ball, get in good position. When he's open, get him the ball.
Portugal is a talented side, but Spain won the last Euro for a reason. They are extremely talented at all three levels. Ronaldo is arguably the world's best footballer, but he isn't going to beat this high-quality team by himself.
Expect this game to be high-scoring. Momentum will be passed back and forth, but Portugal will eventually fade. Ronaldo will find the back of the net, but Spain's depth will be too much to handle.
The Portuguese side is fun to watch, and they're dangerous when Ronaldo receives support, but it won't be enough to earn a berth into the final game.
