9 Recruits That Are Overlooking Their Hometown or In-State Schools

Edwin WeathersbyJun 7, 2018

The basis of recruiting for a college program is to find the best players in the area, region and state and draw them to their school. You always want to lock up your backyard as a program and if a recruit is from your backyard, then it should be a foregone conclusion he ends up at your school.

However, for this read, I'm going to give you nine recruits that are overlooking their hometown and in-state schools. These recruits appear to be set to venture way from home and make new friends in new places.

Let's get started.

9. Tim Kimbrough, LB

1 of 9

Kimbrough is a stout 6'1", 225-pound LB prospect from Indiana. The Hoosier state has produced some good talent as of late and Kimbrough is one of the top players in the state.

However, don't expect him to end up at either Indiana or Purdue anytime soon. In fact, he may not even opt to go to Notre Dame.

Kimbrough, per 247Sports.com, likes Georgia and Ohio State right now.

8. Greg Gilmore, DL

2 of 9

Gilmore is a 6'4", 270-pounder from North Carolina that can play end in a 30-front or DT in a 40-front. He's talented with good quickness and athleticism for a big man.

The Tar Heel state native has a core four, but it doesn't consist of UNC. Per Scout.com, Gilmore has Alabama, Florida, LSU and Clemson in his Top Four.

I like LSU's chances, but anyway you slice it, he won't be playing for North Carolina.

7. Demarcus Robinson, WR

3 of 9

Robinson is a great WR prospect from Georgia, that goes in the 6'2", 195-pound range. He totaled over 50 grabs and 1000 yards last year with 10 scores.

His speed and playmaking ability, however, won't likely be seen at Georgia or Georgia Tech. Per 247Sports.com, Robinson has Clemson leading Florida right now.

With Clemson's hot run in recent weeks, I think Robinson ends up a Tiger.

6. Scott Pagano, DL

4 of 9

Pagano is from Hawaii and it doesn't appear that he will be staying in Paradise to play college ball. To me, it's clear that Pagano wants to play in the SEC.

I think he will end up at LSU, but don't sleep on non-SEC schools like Clemson, Baylor and Nebraska, according to Scout.com.

Pagano is a warrior in the trenches, but he won't be a Warrior in college.

5. Larenz Bryant, OLB

5 of 9

Bryant is a 6'2", 210-pound OLB prospect with good speed, range and pursuit ability. He'll factor in the second level flanks in college and will make his fair share of stops.

On the recruiting front, Bryant is from North Carolina, but really isn't paying much attention to the Tar Heels. South Carolina and Clemson are in the picture, and should Bryant stay in the Carolinas, he'll either be a Gamecock or Tiger.

Yet, based on a report from Scout.com, Bryant has Virginia as his leader with Florida in the mix..

4. Leon McQuay, S

6 of 9

McQuay is a 6'1", 185-pound safety from Florida. He has solid ball skills, speed and good smarts on the field.

Yet, don't expect to be seeing him play college ball in the Sunshine State. McQuay told Scout.com that he has narrowed down his top three to Michigan, Vanderbilt and USC.

So no Florida. No Florida State. No Miami. McQuay is leaving the state.

3. Laquon Treadwell, WR

7 of 9

Treadwell stands about 6'2", 195-pounds and has a good skill set.

He shows solid release quickness, has great length to aid his strike zone and can make plays at all three levels of a defense.

He's from Illinois, but Treadwell probably will not be fighting for the Illini in college. If Treadwell stays in the Big Ten, it's going to be Michigan, if not, then look for Oklahoma or Oklahoma State to be in position to land him.

2. Michael Hutchings, OLB

8 of 9

Hutchings has announced, via Scout.com that he is set to announce his decision on July 1st. His core four are USC, Washington, Oregon and Cal.

He's from Concord De La Salle in Northern California, and Huthcings can say he's looking at Cal all he wants, but I doubt he becomes a Bear.

I think it's either going to be USC or Washington for Hutch', but not in-town Cal.

1. Kendall Fuller, CB

9 of 9

Fuller is from the D.C.-Maryland area and while Randy Edsall was able to land Stefon Diggs last year from Fuller's high school, he likely won't strike gold again.

Fuller probably isn't going to Maryland, and if you follow his recruitment, then you likely see that this race is coming down to Clemson, Virginia Tech and Michigan.

Tigers, Hokies or Wolverines for Fuller, he's not going to be a Terp in all likelihood.
