Deron Williams Rumors: Jason Kidd Will Use D-Will to Extend His Career

Richard LangfordJun 7, 2018

Jason Kidd and Deron Williams are going to be teammates next year, it is just a question of where. Both players are free agents, and Kidd seems set on following Williams.

The two share the same agent in Jeff Schwartz, and ESPN's Jeff Caplan said that the two became friends during their time together on the 2008 Olympic team.

This potential pairing makes perfect sense for Kidd. Caplan also passed along this recent quote from Kidd:

My days of playing 38 minutes are over. For me, it’s the backup role to give him time to rest, but also coming down the stretch to have the chance to play alongside Deron, I think we can be successful.

"

This would allow Kidd to backup a great player that he likes and respects, and he is absolutely right that they could be successful on the court together. It would give whichever team they land on the option of employing a well-rounded backcourt with decent size.

Both players can take smaller defenders down low, and Kidd can post up behind the three point line, which will make doubling up on Williams difficult, and they would be an absolute terror in the open court.

Their passing and vision are a fastbreak waiting to happen, and it will make it easy for them to get into halfcourt sets as well.

So which team will it be? The odds are the Williams will either move to Dallas, or Kidd will reunite with the Nets.

Dallas has always been a rumored favorite to land Williams. He is from the area and they have plenty of cap space. Still, this is far from a done deal.

ESPN's Marc Stein quoted one source "well-acquainted with Williams' thinking" as saying Dallas has no better than a "50-50 shot" of landing Williams, and Sport Illustrated's Sam Amick quoted a source as saying D-Will's preference is to re-sign with New Jersey.

If he does return to the Nets, expect Kidd to follow. Caplan pointed out that Kidd is definitely open to returning to the Nets, but that "[Williams] is the key."

This would be a fun pairing to watch, and Williams is the perfect player to help Kidd extend his marvelous career.
