Why Billy Donovan Really Left the Orlando Magic

Rip SummersbyJun 5, 2007
IconSo maybe Billy Donovan's not going to Orlando after all.
After inking a lucrative deal with the Magic on Friday, the former (and apparently future) Florida coach was making a bee-line for the exit on Monday.  Here's what Orlando had to say about it:
"While Central Florida, the Orlando Magic and Billy were energized with the announcement of his contract signing on Friday, we know there was a different feeling in Gainesville and people have been tugging at him since that time. Billy is conflicted with those emotions and the opportunity he has ahead in Orlando and in the NBA."

Conflicted? That ain't the half of it.
As it stands, Donovan looks set to void his five-year, $27 million dollar deal. Why pass up all that cash?
Easy: He's scared.
Scared of having to prove himself at the next level. Scared of having to leave the comfort of a program he spent 11 years molding into a winner. Scared of having to start over again from scratch, after investing so much time and energy in Gator Nation.
And hey: It's not Donovan's fault. Fear is a human emotion, an evolutionary adaptation. So no, don't blame Billy D for sneaking out through the back door...
Just have the good sense to know a chicken when you see one.
