5 College Football Recruits Who Definitely Made Commitment Mistakes
With the trend of recruits making early commitments, we're going to see many commitments start to waver, take visits and even de-commit. These are young teenagers with a lot of options, pressure and people wanting their attention.
I don't like to criticize any commitment or anything of the sort, yet not all commitments that are made are the right choices. For this read, I'm just going to quickly give you five recruits that may have made a mistake in their choice.
5. Luke Del Rio, QB
1 of 5Del Rio is the son of the former NFL linebacker and current Broncos defensive chief, Jack Del Rio.
The younger Del Rio is a 6'2", 195-pound QB prospect that tossed for over 2800 yards and 20 touchdowns as a junior. He's even been invited to the Elite 11 QB Camp Finals.
Committed to Oklahoma State, Del Rio is sewn up to the Pokes. I just think he could have gone elsewhere as Wes Lunt looks like he's going to be the man in Stillwater for the next four years.
4. Brice Gunter, WR
2 of 5Right now, Texas State is getting a pure, flat-out gem and steal. Gunter is committed to the Bobcats and seems locked in.
Yet, he's a 6'3", 190-pound WR prospect with outstanding hands, ball skills and play making ability.
Gunter may have gotten a bit impatient with his recruitment. He instead chose to hit the camps and combines circuit hard for more exposure that would have netted him higher profile offers.
3. Cody Thomas, QB
3 of 5Oklahoma tried hard to nail in Max Browne, but maybe realized what Thomas didn't, as the depth chart in Norman is stacked at the QB position.
Sure, Landry Jones is gone to the NFL after this year, but then Thomas will have to fight and deal with a talented trio of Blake Bell, Kendall Thompson and 2012 signee Trevor Knight.
Baseball could end up being the better potential option for Thomas, although he does have the talent to compete with the three Sooner QB incumbents.
2. Kevin Olsen, QB
4 of 5Olsen committing to Miami was a huge coup for Al Golden, as now the Canes have a solid QB to build around for the next four seasons.
Olsen probably won't take over and put a team on his back for weeks at a time, but he can make plays and lead an offense.
The only knock is, what is Miami and Olsen going to be playing for in the next several seasons? Sanctions are coming to Coral Gables and sanctions are coming hard.
1. Troy Williams, QB
5 of 5I really admire any recruit that is confident in their abilities and realizes that everywhere they go they will have to compete for playing time.
Yet, I think in terms of the football side of a decision, you want to be smart about it.
Washington signed two very good QB prospects just last cycle in Jeff Lindquist and Cyler Miles.
Washington State and Mike Leach came at Troy Williams very hard, to which he could have competed for the starting Cougar QB gig yesterday, yet he opted to commit to the Huskies and join their crowded QB depth chart.
Edwin Weathersby has worked in scouting/player personnel departments for three professional football teams, including the New York Giants, Cleveland Browns and the Las Vegas Gladiators of the Arena League. He spent a year evaluating prep prospects & writing specific recruiting and scouting content articles for Student Sports Football (now ESPN Rise-HS). A syndicated scout and writer, he's also contributed to WeAreSC.com, GatorBait.net and Diamonds in the Rough Inc., a College Football and NFL Draft magazine.
