SEC Football: Wave of Decommitments Further Proof That Recruiting Never Stops
Robert Nkemdiche's commitment to Clemson over Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Ole Miss and Mississippi State was the biggest recruiting news of the week. Several key decommitments also made headlines in the SEC this week.
Most notably at Georgia.
Derrick Henry, a 5-star running back that had been committed to the Bulldogs since last summer, reopened his recruitment on Wednesday after visiting Alabama over the weekend.
Kyrin Priester, a 4-star wide receiver from Brookwood High School in Snellville, Ga., followed suit by decommitting from the Bulldogs on Friday, according to Kipp Adams of ESPN.com. He is now considering other offers, including those from TCU and Vanderbilt, Fletcher Page of DawgPost.com reports.
LSU wasn't immune to the decommitment bug. The Tigers lost Manvel, Texas wide receiver Kyrion Parker on Friday as well, according to Shea Dixon of Geaux247.com.
What's the moral of the story? Recruiting never stops.
Ever.
These players decommitting from their schools will undoubtedly bring out the criticism that these kids don't know what the meaning of the word "commitment" is.
Don't get lost in that noise.
These are kids that are being swayed by professional recruiters who are very good at their jobs. It shouldn't surprise when those professionals make their heads spin.
Are players sometimes searching for the spotlight during the process? Sure. That happens from time to time. But that assumption should not be the knee-jerk reaction.
The esteemed Andy Staples of SI.com ran the numbers back in January, and 14.6 percent of the members of the Rivals100 classes from 2007 through 2011 decommitted at some point during the process.
That's not that high of a number, but it's enough to keep coaches on their toes 24/7/365.
It's all part of the process nowadays.
