Jerry Sandusky Trial: Recapping the Early Developments
Perhaps there has never been a bigger scandal in college sports, or any level of sports for that matter, than the child sex abuse case against former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky. His arduous trial continues to march forward, and with each passing day, new and disturbing details emerge.
It's difficult to say where the jury may be leaning at this point, but several alleged victims and witnesses have already taken the stand against the disgraced coach. As evidence and accusations continue to pile up against the embattled Sandusky, his legal team, led by attorney Joe Amendola, attempt to mount a counterattack.
Sandusky's counsel has gone to great lengths in order to discredit those who have testified against him, and time will tell if that plan has been an effective one. There is still a long way to go in this trial, and there is no telling what new information might come to light over the next few days.
Here is all the latest news regarding the Sandusky trial, which will continue to take place in Bellefonte, Pa.
Mike McQueary Testifies Regarding Alleged Shower Incident
1 of 5According to the Associated Press, former Penn State assistant coach Mike McQueary took the stand on Tuesday to testify that he had seen Sandusky sexually assaulting a boy in a Penn State locker-room shower in 2001.
McQueary's testimony has long been viewed as integral from the prosecution's point of view since he is the only alleged witness to Sandusky committing a sexual act against a minor.
When McQueary initially came clean about having seen the incident, he maintained that it happened in March 2002, although further investigation has uncovered that the alleged attack took place in February 2001.
Whatever the case, McQueary thoroughly described what he saw and the actions he took on that day. According to the report, McQueary entered the locker room and heard a "skin-on-skin smacking sound." After looking over his shoulder and into a mirror, McQueary said that he could clearly see Sandusky performing anal sex to a young boy in the shower.
He allegedly turned around to ensure what he was seeing was indeed happening and proceeded to slam his locker shut in an effort to prompt Sandusky to stop. It is unclear whether or not Sandusky stopped what he was doing at the time, but McQueary said he rushed out of the locker room and called his father to get advice:
"It was more than my brain could handle. I was making decisions on the fly. I picked up the phone and called my father to get advice from the person I trusted most in my life, because I just saw something ridiculous.
"
During the cross examination, the defense attempted to damage McQueary's credibility by questioning how old the boy was in the alleged attack, but McQueary was defiant as he said that regardless of exact age, Sandusky was having sex with a minor.
Victim No. 1 Details Sandusky's Pattern of Abuse
2 of 5In what was perhaps the most emotional part of Tuesday's hearing, Victim No. 1 took the stand to testify against Sandusky. He was the first victim to step forward and caused a full-scale investigation to be launched against the former Penn State assistant. The alleged victim, who is now 18 years of age, was detailed in his testimony.
According to CNN.com, Victim No. 1 claimed that he had stayed at Sandusky's house more than 100 times as a boy and that Sandusky had sexually abused him on many occasions. He had allegedly met Sandusky through the coach's now infamous Second Mile program, which had been set up to lend support to troubled children. He testified that:
"At first he would kiss me on the forehead goodnight. Then it was kissing me on the cheek, then rubbing my back and cracking my back.
"
The victim said that Sandusky's advances started innocently enough, but that they would soon escalate to something much more sinister, according to CNN.com:
"Sandusky's roaming hands would later move to "rub underneath my shorts," The alleged abuse further escalated when Sandusky "put his mouth on my privates."
"
Things eventually got worse from there, according to the report, as Sandusky then made the boy perform oral sex on him. The boy reportedly grew up without a father, prompting Sandusky to attempt to fill the void, but he ultimately abused his power and standing, according to the victim.
Victim No. 4 Takes Stand and Testifies Against Sandusky
3 of 5While Victim No. 1 may have been the most high-impact person to take the stand on Tuesday, Victim No. 4 was the first. He is now 28 years of age and alleged that he and Sandusky had engaged in at least 40 sexual encounters in Penn State and showers and elsewhere starting when he was 14 years old, according to CNN.com.
Like Victim No. 1, Victim No. 4 grew up without a father and met Sandusky through Second Mile. According to the report, Sandusky reeled in Victim No. 4 by continually showering him with gifts such as uniforms and snowboards, and he even helped the boy obtain cigarettes and marijuana.
The alleged abuse continued because the boy didn't want to lose the perks that came with being associated with Sandusky. According to Victim No. 4, Sandusky treated him differently when they were alone than he did in front of others:
""He treated me like a son in front of other people. Outside of that, he's treating me like his girlfriend," he said, noting Sandusky's habit of putting his hand on the then-teen's thighs when they drove in a car together.
"
There were also several letters from Sandusky to Victim No. 4 submitted for evidence, according to CNN.com, as the prosecution believed that the content in the letter was used as a means of grooming the victim for sexual assault.
Former Penn State linebacker LaVar Arrington, who knew of Victim No. 4 during his time at the university, apologized in the Washington Post for initially defending Sandusky and not realizing what was going on at the time:
"I hate everything that has happened, and now I must admit I feel even worse, knowing what allegedly was happening so close to me, and that I was unaware, he wrote. All I can do is hope that Victim #4 finds this entry and can see that I'm offering my sincerest apologies. I am so sorry this happened.
"
Sandusky's Attorney Joe Amendola Claims Victims Have Monetary Motivations
4 of 5As the defense attorney for a man who is facing multiple count of sexual abuse against children, it should come as no surprise that Sandusky's lawyer, Joe Amendola, is pulling out all the stops to discredit the alleged victims. According to CNN.com, Amendola questioned why so many of the victims have civil lawyers.
He claimed that a lot of people have lied throughout this process and that while the alleged victims' testimonies will likely be extreme, it doesn't mean that they will be accurate. In his opening statement, he told jurors:
"One of the keys to this case, one of the keys to your perception ... is to wait until all the evidence is in. Some of it will be graphic ... it's going to be awful. But that doesn't make it true.
"
In an effort to further discredit those who are testifying against Sandusky, Amendola intends to question children from the Second Mile program that were positively affected by Sandusky, according to the report.
With so much ammunition against his client, Amendola is clearly trying to fortify his character in an effort to make the victims' accounts seem implausible.
Only the jury can determine whether or not the victims coming forward are driven by money, but Amendola will continue to hammer that point home. According to CNN.com, however, attorney for Victim No. 5 Tom Kline said that his client has never made mention of money, but rather considers it an "obligation of citizenship" to testify.
Mike McQueary's Father Reportedly Set to Take Stand on Wednesday
5 of 5Although he has been mentioned quite often throughout the Sandusky saga, not much has been heard from the father of former Penn State assistant Mike McQueary, John McQueary.
When the younger McQueary allegedly saw Sandusky sexually assaulting a boy in a Penn State locker-room shower in 2001, his father was the first person that he contacted.
According to SI.com, McQueary is expected to testify on Wednesday as he was seen outside the courthouse. While John McQueary isn't technically a witness of any inappropriate conduct, his son discussed the alleged incident with him moments after it happened.
Mike McQueary has received plenty of scrutiny for calling his father rather than stopping the alleged assault and notifying the police. Perhaps John McQueary can shed some light on why his son made that decision, though, and what his mental state was at the time.
John McQueary's testimony could certainly go a long way in influencing how the jury views his son's credibility. Depending upon what the elder McQueary reveals, it could either be a huge positive or a huge negative for his son.
This testimony may not be as impactful as those of the alleged victims, but in terms of the supporting cast, John McQueary is a pretty important figure in this case.
