NBA Finals: A Quick Preview of Basketball's Biggest Stage

Kristopher KeatonJun 6, 2018

We have waited almost six months for this moment.

The plots in this series are plenty: The best player in the NBA vs. the player that will soon be the best; the Choker vs. the Closer; the media punching bags vs. the media darlings; the team built the "wrong" way vs. the team built the "right" way; experience vs. youth; big city vs. small city.

In other words, the Miami Heat vs. the Oklahoma City Thunder.

On paper, the teams are pretty evenly matched. Each team boasts three star players.

For OKC, you have the three-time scoring champion in Kevin Durant, arguably the most athletic point guard in NBA history in Russell Westbrook and the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year in James Harden.

For Miami, you have the three-time MVP in LeBron James, a former Finals MVP in Dwyane Wade and a seven-time All-Star in Chris Bosh.

The numbers say these three players on each side will cancel each other out, meaning the role players will determine this series. Can Serge Ibaka and Kendrick Perkins stay out of foul trouble and control the paint? Can Mario Chalmers, Shane Battier, Mike Miller and James Jones knock down the open looks they will receive from James and Wade?

The coaching will also be important in this series. Scott Brooks was Coach of The Year in 2010, and has grown as a coach as this team has grown as players. Erik Spoelstra has NBA Finals experience as a coach, though he still struggles in play calling and defensive assignments at times. Whoever comes through with better adjustments and team execution will give their team the upper hand.

There is also the secondary plot of this hopefully being a third-time charm for James in the Finals. That's something that will be addressed in about two weeks. But for now, as a basketball fan, instead of making a prediction, I'm just going to sit back and enjoy the show of two great teams.
