College Football: 5 Teams We Love to Hate
You know that team that always acts like it's better than everyone? The one that is so popular, but never lives up to expectations?
Well this is a list of the five worst offenders.
Each and every year, it seems like these five teams are the ones with the biggest hype. They get the most attention, leading to more popularity. Everybody (read: their fans) thinks they will be in contention for a conference/national title.
This in turn leads to a form of obnoxiousness where they think they are better than everyone else. Sometimes they live up to it, but mostly, it is all hot air.
If you want to feel good about your team and your hate for these ones, read along and savor every word of criticism. If your team is one of those on the list, well, please skip along and comment about how Bleacher Report is a "terrible website with terrible writers."
Now for the fun part.
Notre Dame
1 of 5Year in and year out, the headlines always follow the same question: Is Notre Dame ready to be back in the national spotlight?
Year in and year out, the Irish consistently have the same answer: No.
Ever since Lou Holtz left, the Fighting Irish have struggled to find consistency. Some years they will be terrible and not even make a bowl game (See: Entire 2007 season). Other years they will have a good regular season, but be totally crushed in their bowl game (See: 2007 Sugar Bowl).
For a team that is supposedly in the national title contention every year, the Irish sure do falter a lot.
While I'm sure the publicity is great for the university, it annoys all the other fans who have to keep hearing about Notre Dame's failures.
I just wish they would actually return to prominence, so we could stop hearing about all these coaching changes and drama.
Florida
2 of 5In the SEC, there are teams that have a right to brag about success. LSU and Alabama are the ones that come to mind.
The Florida Gators are not one of them.
These past two seasons have left a bad taste in Gators fans' mouths, while leaving joy in everybody else's. Despite recruiting success and great talents, they barely slipped into a bowl game this year.
Let's be real: Ever since Choirboy Timmy left, the Gators have struggled to find success. Whether it be coaching changes or player production problems, Florida has been pretty beat up these past few years. They really needed it after being pretentious for a decade or two.
What really rubs people the wrong way is their attitude like they created college football. Tradition is something that is created over the years, not faked. They're not fooling anybody. We all know they were only relevant starting in the '90s.
Maybe if Tim Tebow came back to coach...
USC
3 of 5The hate for USC has died down the past few years, mostly because of the punishment it incurred. Some argued that they needed a tougher one.
After all, paying for the services of Reggie Bush tends to not get you a lot of fans in the college football world. It just went to show that USC was willing to do anything to win.
Never content with being on the down low, USC put themselves right back into the thick of hate by hiring that scumbag Lane Kiffin to coach for them. No, that is not an unsubstantiated claim. Perhaps a quick look at his Wikipedia page would fill us in. Just jump down to the "Coaching Career" section and get riled up all over again.
Of course, USC has been hated long before now. They are one of those teams that has bragged about all their success and won't stop. Barkley is their new idol now, so expect his fanbase to be clamoring for a Heisman all season.
Let's just hope they don't buy it.
Texas
4 of 5I think it is high time that Longhorns fans just face that fact that they're beloved team is totally underwhelming. It would relieve a lot of headaches across their fanbase and the nation.
Trying to argue that Mack Brown is an underachieving coach to a Texas fan is less productive than conversing with a brick wall. Perhaps it's their sheer stubbornness that rubs everybody the wrong way.
Or it could be the fact that despite amazing recruiting classes and superstar players, they are unable to even consistently win their conference. Texas is a great example of a team that is all talk, no game.
They single-handedly caused Texas A&M, Nebraska and Colorado to leave the Big 12 due to their drama queen status and money-hogging (OK that isn't really their fault). Their ego got the best of them and everybody else.
Pretty large consequences for a team that struggles to win its conference.
Alabama
5 of 5Who would have thought that a team could actually whine itself into a national championship? Of course it would be Alabama too.
Who else could have complained so hard and done some underhanded things to get themselves into the national championship? The Crimson Tide that's who.
People's dislike of them stems way back though. They were huge in creating college football, I get that. But they're fans are arguably more stubborn than Longhorns fans. Even when they're bad, they make up excuses. You could whoop them 50-0 and they would still think they are the better team.
Like others on this list, they are also criticized for letting players do whatever they want and obtaining numerous violations. But hey, anything to win, right?
SEC teams don't like them, out-of-conference teams don't like them; pretty much every team except Alabama doesn't like Alabama.
Can't wait to see what happens when they go into some down years.
