Euro 2012 Live Stream: Matches That Expose Overrated Favorites

Jessica MarieJun 5, 2018

Saturday is finally the day when the Group of Death begins its epic battle for supremacy, which means a couple of these teams are about to get exposed, despite the hype that has surrounded them throughout the last month of preparation.

All four Group B contenders—Holland, Denmark, Portugal and Germany—will take to the pitch on Saturday afternoon, and among them, everyone knows which two are expected to advance when all is said and done in this round. But a couple of these teams are setting themselves up for a reality check as the action kicks off.

Here are the teams to be wary of on Saturday.

Netherlands (vs. Denmark)
Saturday, June 9, 12 p.m. ET

This is a team that has Robin Van Persie, Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder. It's going up against Denmark, the weakest link among the bunch. It knows that the last time these teams faced off two years ago, it came up with a resounding 2-0 victory in the World Cup. So, what's the problem?

A trap game. By all indications, the Dutch should win, but they're in danger of becoming just a little bit overconfident. Midfielder Mark Van Bommel admitted as much during a press conference this week, when he said, according to SoccerWay.com, that his team felt invincible during its 2010 World Cup run. And we all know how that ended.

Plus, Denmark has been playing well of late, winning six of its last eight, including five of six over superpower Portugal. The opposite has been the case for the Dutch: Despite winning their last two by a combined score of 8-0, they've dropped four of seven overall.

When it comes down to it, the Dutch have to win this matchup in order to set themselves up for success against Germany and Portugal, and they could get picked off by a lesser opponent when they least expect it on Saturday.

Portugal (vs. Germany)
Saturday, June 9, 2:45 p.m. ET

In its first matchup, Portugal drew the unfortunate honor of facing Germany, the team that many believe has the best shot at winning it all this summer. Even though entering any tournament with Cristiano Ronaldo on your side is certainly a boon, this could be a case of the superstar trying to do too much and getting shut down. If Ronaldo gets shut down, does Portugal have enough power to keep rolling?

Germany is a three-time champion that is completely focused on defeating not just Ronaldo but the entire Portugal squad. As Germany coach Joachim Loew told the New York Daily News, "We are ready and highly motivated for the game and ready to start."

This isn't a squad that's falling into the trap of concentrating so hard on one player that it fails to account for the talent on the rest of the team. If history is any indication, Portugal is in trouble: Germany won the last two matchups between the two in the 2006 World Cup and at Euro 2008.
