ESPN 150: Notre Dame's Jaylon Smith Jumps Up and More Notes from New Rankings
ESPN just got around to revising its Top 150 recruiting rankings as we head into the summer season and there were a couple big moves.
Most notably, Notre Dame's recent big commitment, Jaylon Smith, was able to climb over 20 spots from 46 to 20 on their list. The linebacker from Indiana is one of the nation's best prospects and, after taking another hard look at him, ESPN moved him up accordingly.
Another mover was Shane Morris, a quarterback who is committed to the Michigan Wolverines. Not quite the leaper that Smith was, however, he was able to go from 37 to 32 after showing the scouts a little more of what he can do.
In following Morris, the biggest knock we've had has been the consistency and his ability to use the proper mechanics on a play-by-play basis. He's showing that push now and, if it carries on through the season, he will continue to climb the board.
In the news of uncommitted players, there are three running backs who saw their stock drastically improve. Alvin Kamara, Ryan Green and Derrick Green all jumped up big on the scouts' lists. Watching the players in person truly is a big determinant in measuring a ballplayer's ceiling.
Two other SEC players who saw sizable gains were on the defensive side of the ball.
Georgia's cornerback commitment, Shaq Wiggins, got a 51-spot jump, from 86 to 35, based largely upon the fact that he's showing himself to be taller than most people expected out of his tape.
At South Carolina, Matt Rolin also got a jump. The linebacker from Virginia moved from 104 to 79 on the ESPN Top 150. Big leap for the Gamecocks commitment and another solid class is being put together by Steve Spurrier.
Still the most interesting point on the ESPN Top 150 is where the quarterbacks rank. Max Browne is atop most scouting services as the top pro-style quarterback.
However, ESPN still has Christian Hackenberg, a Penn State commit, as the top prospect at the position. Max Browne is not far behind, moving from 13th to 12th on the list; Lane Kiffin and USC still got a heck of a ball player in Browne.
