Madrid Open 2012 Scores: Breaking Down Most Surprising Results so Far

Tim KeeneyJun 5, 2018

The Madrid Open, for the most part, has played out how we've expected it to so far. Stars such as Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer have advanced, but it's how they are winning that is the surprising part.

To be fair, the ridiculous blue clay in Madrid is the likely reason why these stars are struggling, but they are struggling nonetheless.

Let's take a look at the most surprising results so far.

Novak Djokovic defeats Daniel Gimeno-Traver

It's not shocking that Djokovic beat the world's No. 137, but the fact that he dropped the second set against Gimeno-Traver is.

Djoker lost the second set two games to six in what was an extremely surprising result. Like we mentioned earlier, he wasn't happy with the surface (via ESPN):

"

"I hit five balls throughout the whole match," said Djokovic. "Everything else I was just trying to put the ball in the court so I just rely on my serve and getting some points eventually from his unforced errors."

"For me that's not tennis. Either I come up with the football shoes or I invite Chuck Norris to advise me on how I should play on this court."

"

Still, there's nothing Djokovic can do about the surface now. If he continues to struggle like he did against Gimeno-Traver, he will struggle during the tournament.

Marin Cilic defeats John Isner

Once again, the American Isner, who is ranked No. 8 in the world, comes out of a big tournament with a disappointing finish. He just can't seem to live up to expectations.

Against Cilic—who is ranked No. 22, so this isn't a terrible loss, but it's still disappointing—Isner only got in 62 percent of his first serves. For a guy who relies on a big ol' serve, that just didn't get it done.

As a result, Isner didn't even win a set against the Croatian.

Roger Federer defeats Milos Raonic

Much like Djokovic's result, this is simply surprising because Federer dropped a set to Raonic, the No. 23 in the world.

Not only did Fed-Ex lose the first set, he barely escaped the second and the third went to a tiebreak. Federer came very, very close to losing this match.

Up next for Federer is No. 14 Richard Gasquet. If he plays like he did against Raonic, he'll be bounced from this tournament.
